If you do not agree with the following please don't bash me and if you have any more ideas that would make Minecraft more "Realistic" please comment, but don't hound someone for having a different opinion than you, please.
SHARDS-
In the future i think there should be a Minecraft HD available for download. This would basically be an HD texturepack but the resolution (i think is the right word) would not just be for looks. The resolution of the game would also allow "shards" (as i'm going to call them) to fall off of the block while breaking it, they will enter your inventory, and when they are in you inventory with 8 others of the same type (9 of the same type of "shard") they will automatically combine themselves to form the whole type of the block, however sometimes a block will drop an odd number of "shards". 9 stone "shards" for cobble stone (which can be smelted into stone), 9 wood "shards" for one log (or 2 for a stick, or 4 for a plank), and so on. You would obtain stone shards when mining ores. You will still get the ore its self, but it will present its self as a "lump" or "fragment" this depends on the type of pick you use, which leads me to the next topic.
ALL PICKS BREAK ALL ORES-
When you mine an ore with a wooden pick what do you expect to happen? What i expect to happen is that you'll loose some of the ore and you get most of the stone surrounding said ore. In other words the lower quality of pick you use the longer it will take to mine the ore, the less of the ore you'll get, and the more of the stone "shards" you'll get. For example, You have a block of iron ore right in front of you. You have an iron pick and a wooden pick. You use the iron pick you get 5-7 stone "shards" (not quite making a cobblestone) and you get 3-5 iron "lumps" which, if you got 5, makes 2 full ingots after doing some smelting (there would be a progress bar in the furnace that fills up when you have enough "lumps" or "fragments" of the same material) but the 5th "lump" stands alone. Now, if you used the wooden pick you would have received 12-16 stone "shards" and only one iron lump (that sucks) this event would then let you know that next time you should use the iron pick. This tweak would be similar to the way you can break obsidian with both a diamond pick and a iron pick (which takes a massive amount of more time with out yielding any results) but in this case you actually get something from using the improper pick making mining more realistic and slightly easier.
MOB WEAK POINTS
When fighting a zombie don't you wish you could cut its head off? well in this Minecraft HD you could do that. If the battle mechanics were changed so that you could hack off arms and lop off heads, i think the combat would be more enjoyable. They may already be a mod like this, but it would need to be implemented to make Minecraft HD as realistic as possible without loosing the classic feel of Minecraft.
MISC.-
In addition to the following a few things could be added like an engine like is seen in the shaders SonicEther (i think his name is) has presented, but also applied to torches, lanterns, lamps, glowstone, and the Mining Helmets that would also be implemented they would be portable light sources that you wear as a helmet.
I was thinking about the kind of effects these additions would have, and i think it would either work better as a mod, or a different game all together, with Mojang and Sony (or Microsoft) as a collaborator in order to bring a different minecraft experience all together.
Feel free to ask questions... and please, if you criticize, make it constructive.
i like the shards idea, then on dirt for example, you could smooth it out by digging out only shards, and the shards would come from where your cross hair is.

Mojang wouldn't use any of their time to make some HD pack, because that's really not how they wanted their game to be played.
The resolution of the game would also allow "shards" (as i'm going to call them) to fall off of the block while breaking it, they will enter your inventory, and when they are in you inventory with 8 others of the same type (9 of the same type of "shard") they will automatically combine themselves to form the whole type of the block
That would be really pointless. These shards would just be inventory clutter. No one will want to keep track of all these shard types, as we'd all be better off just breaking a whole block to take, and then be done with it.

The game presents us with enough stone and wood, so we still don't need to tack on shards. Also, you're making ore mining more complex than it needs to be, and having ore drop different depending what pick we use would be a pain in the ass.

No. All picks breaking ores just wouldn't work, as these higher level ores encourage us to level up our tools, and not just mindlessly run towards at an extremely hard to find diamond ore with our wooden pickaxes. We also level up our tools for reasons of durability and mining speed, so even if your idea came true, I'd still just use my iron or diamond pickaxe after throwing my low-durability and slow-mining speed wooden pickaxe away.
Your ideas would come off as more of an annoying burden than being fun or intuitive. Chances are, we don't want picks clogging up our inventory and making ore mining more tedious.

Yeah... cutting off a mob's head or arms doesn't fit the game very well.

Nope. Moving light sources don't work in this game.
This is a good idea... But it's not quite vanilla. It would kind of break the current system of minecraft. It would fit better as a mod.
I agree, Minecraft is a game with weird physics and I want to keep it that way, perhaps when Notch/Jeb/Whomever releases the minecraft source code, someone will make more real physics.

You make a LOT of good points, such as the light engines being extremely buggy. However, i believe you misunderstood the "Shards" part of my post. The "Shards" automatically form the block the 9 of them make, but some block drop an uneven number which until you get like 4 or 5 more shards would be clutter, but this is about realism not what is more convenient (i.e. real life iron miners get a lot of stone in addition to the ores). Now about the picks.... There is still a reason for making higher quality tools, the higher quality tool you have the more of the actual ore you get, and the less of the stone part of the block you would get. Now about the "HD Pack" as you put it... its not just for cosmetics... is changes the games resolution all together, granted it wouldn't really fit minecraft to have the ability to actually have rendered particles (or "shards") with in the blocks or actually be high resolution, but this is what i want, and if the rest of the community doesn't want it or Mojang can't make it happen... So be it. Like i said you have a lot of good points.
i like the shards idea, then on dirt for example, you could smooth it out by digging out only shards, and the shards would come from where your cross hair is.
Not quite to the extent i was going for, but that would be pretty awesome.... It would fit even less into minecraft though.

When i suggested this kind of content i didn't mean that Mojang should turn Minecraft development into this type of gameplay... but i thought it would be a rather hefty file for a mod...
The problem with the miner's helmet is that moving light is laggy as ****
every time a light level changes, there's a chunk update
so there's a chunk update for every step you take
I don't meat to be difficult, but there has to be a way to get around it... well, not really in the way Minecraft is programmed now, anyway. the way they programmed it kinda forces light to move with the chunk updates.
How about blocks staying cracked after you mine them partially and having less durability? Like, if you hit a stone block with a pick twice, it stays cracked after you stop, and it only takes a couple more hits to break it.

Yea... real stone doesn't regenerate... so that would be good.
Then there would have to be two types of servers which would split the community almost right down the middle.
There are already two types: survival and creative. Actually, even more if you count the vanilla-ness of the server and how much the OPs interfere. Adding one more game mode would be fine.
First of all. FUN > REALISM, second of all, this idea is complicated and rather boring. Thirdly, HD should only be for texture packs. It just ain't Minecraft's style. Though, the fighting improvements are a good idea. I'm absolutely certain there have been shitloads of suggestions already doing that in better vays, and maybe official support for HD texture packs vould be nice.

You would obtain stone shards when mining ores. You will still get the ore its self, but it will present its self as a "lump" or "fragment" this depends on the type of pick you use, which leads me to the next topic. Shards, simply, why? This does not make it more fun, nor more realistic in any way. It simply means maybe 5 more stone blocks per one-day mining spree.
The whole ore system is designed to give you a reason to upgrade your stuff instead of sticking with plain wooden or stone picks.
The entire "shards" system is complex, and more of a hindrance and annoyance than a fun addition. Complex doesn't always equal fun.
The only addition I wish to see in combat is more animation. Hacking off limbs isn't exactly fun for all ages, frankly it's pretty much...weird, in a game where everything is cubed.

In addition to the following a few things could be added like an engine like is seen in the shaders SonicEther (i think his name is) has presented, but also applied to torches, lanterns, lamps, glowstone, and the Mining Helmets that would also be implemented they would be portable light sources that you wear as a helmet. Portable light sources cause lag, and lanterns were rejected after Redstone Lamps were added.
I was thinking about the kind of effects these additions would have, and i think it would either work better as a mod, or a different game all together, with Mojang and Sony (or Microsoft) as a collaborator in order to bring a different minecraft experience all together. This is what bugs me mostly; if you don't want it in vanilla, why are you suggesting it for vanilla? Try the mods suggestion.
Feel free to ask questions... and please, if you criticize, make it constructive.
Yeah, I don't think these add a fun type of realism. I'm all for cracked blocks staying cracked after being damaged (but not destroyed completely) by players hitting them or by explosions.

It would not be a very good idea. Plus, an HD texture is a waste of time for Mojang.

No. It beats the point of collecting other ores to craft better tools.

I suggested this before. Many commenters said that this will affect Minecraft's rating even without all the blood and gore.

This will only be more of an aesthetic/cosmetic (I don't really know the difference) change to Minecraft. It isn't that all necessary. The mod version is already very nice. Mining helmets have been suggested many times but is not approved. Portable torches can be nice but not helmets.
I was thinking about the kind of effects these additions would have, and i think it would either work better as a mod, or a different game all together, with Mojang and Sony (or Microsoft) as a collaborator in order to bring a different minecraft experience all together.
No additional developers. I don't want any fancy stuff or major revamps to the game made by other developers.

My opinion on this is that how the hell is a WOODEN pick be able to break something as hard as obsidian? The concept is flawed considering the implementaion. Obsidian is described as a hard material in the game and that is the game physics. Not to mention that wood doesn't really break stone that well either.
Clearly i'm not as good with words as I had previously thought... Some of what you people are saying is true, but others just seem like they don't entirely understand. Logically the "shards" idea isn't as practical as i had thought, but you still need my shard system in order for my mining system to work and some of you just ignore one or the other of my systems. The mining system where all picks can break all ores makes sense with the shard system in coherence. granted you would still need to upgrade your picks, because there's a chance that you'll get more stone from the ore block (which in case you die hard vanilla minecraft fans haven't noticed, is textured so that it appears as though it is mostly stone). For example, you have a stone pick and you see diamond ore... you go to break it and you only get stone shards from it. THE HIGHEST QUALITY OF THE PICKS STILL YIELDS THE BEST RESULTS! Read the full post word for word before you start complaining about how much YOU don't like idea because if one person likes the idea there mathematically HAS to be other people that like it as well, which leads me to my next point. Did you miss the part of my post where i said "i'v thought about the effects this would have the minecraft community and decided that it would work better as a mod or a different game altogether..."? Do you know why i said that? BECAUSE IT'S TRUE AND I REALIZE THAT IT'S TRUE! And by the way, my point of the different combat system (with the hacking off of zombie heads) was written poorly on my part. My point in saying that was that there should be other ways to make critical hits without jumping around like an idiot, like hitting them in the head. That's the way they kill zombies in all the movies. And like i said. There are some of you that have good points, that i'm not sure how to combat, but others just sound like they didn't read the post. Also I apologize for having more that on topic on the post. Its just that i thought that because of the way i was categorizing, they all fit into the same topic... i just kinda figured that the overall topic for this post was realism.... as the tag and title suggest.

I'm sorry. I didn't know that Iron Ore was as hard as obsidian. I NEVER said that wooden tools could break obsidian. I did, however, say that iron could break obsidian (with no results) and that wooden tools should be able to break iron ore, but yield less actual ore and more of the stone surrounding the ore. in real life when you get ore you get lumps that then get purified, and smelted into tools. i didn't like how in minecraft you just get the whole block, stone is harder to melt than iron (look it up, rocks have a much higher melting point). Please read the post completely before posting a comment that give no constructive criticism, and if you don't want to read the post... don't comment (unless you have a better reason than "this looks dumb" to comment)
