I'm sure someone must have suggested this at some point in time.
I had an idea that was inspired by the Broken blocks suggestion. Moss should grow naturally in swamps. It would give swamps a more bushy textured feeling to it. It's currently too flat. A nice textured plant would help liven it up. That's not the only reason I want this in the game.
The real reason is that it would provide a simple way for making mossy blocks. Cobblestone or stonebrick that is placed next to moss will eventually change into the mossy version of it. The extent of growth should follow all around the adjacent blocks and the blocks above it. It wont affect the block directly below it.
Leaves = moss
I picture the moss changing compatible blocks at the same level as the plant but also one block below the plant in all directions. If this doesn't seem right, mention it. The spread can be adjusted.
Balancing the Mechanic
Moss must be planted on a dirt block like other plants and thrives in a moist environment. There needs to be water nearby for it to survive. If there is no water there, then it will not spread to other blocks and eventually will die, becoming dead moss. Destroying the dirt block that it is planted on will uproot the plant. I think that the only way you could be able to transport it is with a shovel or wait for it to slowly spread. Spreading could be as fast as mushrooms.
Well that's the idea. I thought of it, due to the thought of TNT removing moss from mossy stones. the replacement would be to regrow moss on them.
Sounds like a great idea, Should at least become a mod. Maybe Shears could be use to collect the plant? Like other minecraft plant-life.

I think of Christmas as a happy time, It's the only time of the year when every man and woman sees each other as equals. Even if it hasn't put any gold or silver in my pockets I say it has done me good and will do me good and there for I say god bless it! ~Scrooge's Nephew.
