I have an idea to make cauldrons more useful, instead of just sitting there...Doing NOTHING AT ALL. Anyways, idea 1 is that you throw in your potion ingredients. Let's say you throw in a wart, the water is now awkward potion water, but the wart disappeared. Then you throw in...a glistering melon. The water then changes pink, like it is inside the bottle.
That way, it's like you're actually making a potion, from inside a cauldron and you're throwing random crap inside, except without the odd chanting of random words. Idea 2 is that there's a GUI for the cauldron. You right-click it, GUI pops up, you put two things to throw in there, and viola! You got potion water. Now for brewing stands...
I don't want the brewing stands to go away, because there's another use for them instead! Now, you could have been wondering how you might extend the duration or increase the effect, not to forget the splash potions. See, the brewing stand will do just that. You can't input potion ingredients anymore, but you can input glowstone dust, redstone, and gunpowder. That way, it doesn't seem weird how bottles instantly change shape after you throw in gunpowder, yet it may seem a bit reasonable for the dust...
What do you guys think?
Edit: When scooping the potion mix from the bottle, it fills 3 bottles, just like what the current cauldron does. Except for the potion mix part.
They're the only way to store water in the Nether.

Dude, you obviously don't know jack feces about Minecraft. It used to be exactly this way, until they figured it was not user friendly and gave that job to the Brewing Stand. As of now, the Cauldrons only use is for holding water, and I just posted something 3 minutes ago about a new use for Cauldrons.

You have 2 choices: +1 me with your computer,
or -1 me with your mind. One of them is less frustrating.

1) You don't have to be so harsh. 2) I just saw your post right after mine, but yours is for food. I put mine as for potions.
Hm. Good point, yet, I made it so there's an ACTUAL use for cauldrons, not just storing water. Who wants water stored in iron just for looks? :c
If you keep your cauldrons filled with water, you won't have to go through a portal to fill your potion bottles if you have a nether base.

Yet another good point...I just dislike the fact that it only stores 3 bottles.
That's true, especially since it takes a full bucket to fill it, when a bucket caries a water source block (which can be used to fill bottles indefinitely).
Perhaps cauldrons should just not be drained when using a bottle on it.

I never noticed that up until now. Why are cauldrons limited when having a 1 block water source infinite?
If you put it like that, then my idea would be completely over-powered because then you'd have infinite potion water without having to remake it...
Honestly I don't see why they can't just use both brewing stands and cauldrons. It really isn't that big of a deal. And like someone pointed out before, they could use cauldrons for making simple or advanced potions and brewing stands simple or advanced. Or maybe they could use the cauldrons to mass produce potions? And about it not being "user friendly" so what you have to memorize which potions you threw in there big deal. The only problem is you have to guess and test at first which is what makes it fun (or you could check the wiki if they were used) I mean enchanting things isn't so user friendly either but no one seems to complain about that!
That would be very hard to code, and we already have a brewing stand for that. No need to make two items do the same thing.
Anyway, why do people want everything to have an use? You say "instead of just sitting there...Doing NOTHING AT ALL". Can't we have a pure decorative block? By your logic slabs, stairs and paintings should be removed.
i think that this would be a good idea if there wasa catalyst(like netherwart) in the normal world. this way players could make potions pre-nether, but they couldn't upgrade them.
You can store your water in chests, dispensers, and furnaces too, but that's besides the point.
I liked the old way of brewing it, but it would have been overpowered. I'm assuming your idea is basically making a low grade potion with a short duration, and you can brew it with the stand to make a more potent potion. This sounds like it could work, but how does it fix the problem that Jeb changed this idea originally?
What happens if you keep throwing ingredients in the potion?
I have a potential idea for this including NPCs, but I want to hear your insight first.
Maybe you cook up basic potions in the cauldron, and in the brewing stand you can make advanced potions and mix them for special potions.
Or maybe a the opposite and the cauldrons would be for very awesome potions but take a while to learn. Like a flying potion or invisibility potion. There be more complex potion's but that is all i can think of
Let's get to the point.

Water is a crucial ingredient in most potions, I think it is more than just for looks, especially if you wish to survive in the nether.

Me, my good sir.
I love the appearance of partially/fully filled cauldrons in my kitchens.
