It's a simple idea, though I'm not sure how complicated this would be to perform:
The lower part of the furnace should show a dim glow when it is filled with coal for example.
The upper part could maybe get a door, which is closed when filled and open ( looking like now ) when empty ( the output of course, input wouldn't make sense because it would be cooking then ).
This would be a nice way to see directly which furnace is in use or needs refuelling.

For clarification : This leads to four states, and also 4 furnace sprites :
Empty : Both holes empty
Coal filled : Dim glow in lower compartment
Coal filled and cooking : Burning and door on top compartment closed.
Coal filled and done cooking : Dim glow in lower compartment and door on top compartment closed.
just to note. currently there are two furnace sprites: On
Off
if there was a door that was Open/Closed when it is Empty/Full Respectively, then they would need 3 On - Full
Off - Full
Off - Empty
not really sure if that would be a problem or not though.

No, it is lit when it is busy cooking.
He's talking about if it is filled with coal but not cooking.
Exactly.

I have no info myself if this is even possible though. But I guessed it should be doable since more than one is working already.
