Also, I don't like this idea. All of the servers will just be insta-digging because they want the most players. It's really not a good idea, in my opinion.
If certain servers want to make instant dig possible, let them. If you don't like their digging times, you could just not play on the server. Just because it's an option, it doesn't mean every server will make messed up settings.

Sorry, I just come from the TF2 community and it seems like all the good servers are eaten by the losers who just want all the players they can get. You've got to admit, this game attracts a lot of kids, and kids like to take the easy way out.
I don't really care that much, I won't be playing on anyone's server but my own anyway. I just think that maybe Notch should protect us from ourselves in some cases.

Or you could just do what you want to do? Not every server is gonna be a bunch of kids, you should know, is it like that on TF2? Having these options could just customize further how we want to play the game. I have a few ideas of my own actually, like being able to choose what items and how many you spawn with, like maybe spawning with 40 stone and a stone sword for a sort of deathmatch sort of thing.
I'm in with the naysayers on this one. Consistency in interaction will keep the game from becoming a madhouse. If I see a grey stone block in the game, I should be able to guess how long it will take to clear, instead of having to go to every block in every server just to see how they react. At that point there's really no sense in having material types. At the very least, provide an icon to show that a server has been jacked in this fashion.
Your icon idea made me think of a little circle timer that counted down how long it would take to break the block.
Would be easy to do, and I wouldn't mind it in normal survival, sometimes I under-estimate how long a block will take to break and move away before I finish breaking it.
Edit: Oops @ post above me.
I linked from the sticky then forgot where it was from.
