very good idea, i have heard it before, but i like it so much i don't care if someone resuggests it.
How about it being crafted like:
where ham is leather, and the wood changes with different materials;
wood shield is least effetive, and makes you burn longer
gold is most effective, but breaks easiest,
iron is normal,
Diamond is second most effective, and takes a lot of damage before breaking,
for the enchantments:
The shield increases health at the same time as it protects it
The shield allows you to gain arrows that hit the shield
reduces amount of damage taken by the chest plate
damage protection tie 1 2 3
blast protection tier 1 2 3, 3 also protects the blocks behind you
fire protection 1 2 3, 3 also protects blocks behind you
Tank, which lets you deflect most damage, take a lot, and it directs the enemy's attention to you
heals you if you have it raised
to raise, you press b/r; to equip, there will be another armor slot above the 2x2 crafting slots
I'm not in favor of gold being more effective since it is a pure decoration material for all other weapons and tools (except you can enchant them the best). Diamond should be the best, period. Wood could die from fire, and iron and gold could take heavy damage. Gold could be better than wood in the case of shields.
Maybe gold shields could be round instead of chevron-shaped, adding more of a distinction (while also altering how it blocks attacks), and have cool designs on it. I'd like all of these to be dye-able, too.

i can understand where your idea is coming from, but a gold pickax breaks stone faster than diamond, so a gold shield would block more imminent danger than diamond, but would break faster

Ah, I get it. Makes sense in Minecraft even though it doesn't in reality, so I'm leaning more towards your idea.
I have some ideas for enchantments (Should this be added)
Fire resistance (Obviously wouldn't work for Diamond shields, shield will not burn in fire)
Bane of Anthropods (If a spider, cave spider, or silverfish attack you, THEY get damaged)
Bane of (Insert whatever sword enchantment that damages everything else here) (Damages every non-anthropod except Enderman/Enderdragon/Any other "End" monster they add)
Bane of End (Damages any "End" monster, this would have to be an extremely rare enchantment, since it should also allow you to stop endermen from teleporting around you when attacking you)
GlowShield (Will glow, allowing for a good light source in caves)
Diamond Detector (Will glow like a lvl V glowshield if within 10 blocks of diamond)
Ya, most of these don't even put it as a use for a shield, but I still think that if shields would be implemented, these
should be the enchantments.

If it has been suggested a lot, then maybe, just maybe, it should be implemented because obviously a lot of people want it.
I have 8gb RAM, HD 5570 1024MB, AMD X4 processor and when I threw ONE torch in the ground with the dynamic light mod, it lagged like ****.
I have 3GB RAM, a 2006 NVIDIA card with 128MB VRAM, and a 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo.
I can run a 128x128 texture pack on far view and fancy everything (graphics, lighting, etc) and not have lag. :laugh.gif:
Your description actually sounds quite a lot like my implementation. Look up Nerd-Boy's shield mod.
So the shields arn't overpwered they only block in a 180 degree arc and the amount of time you can block is limited (based on the material)
Also I am actually also made a whole new weapon system (including dual wielding) which I will port to my shield mod when the kinks are worked out (link here). The main reason I mention this is because you can dye the iron, gold & diamond shields (like you mentioned)

It sounds really cool, but unfortunately, mods don't work in MP. I don't do SP at all.
Parrying = half defense quality of shield
Shield = Full defense quality
There could be light leather shields, heavy iron ones, heavier ones slow you down a bit more than other shields when blocking.
Has anyone suggested making a shield a separate item and by crafting together a shield and sword getting a combo item? (sword shown like normal, but with shield behind it)
Left clicking is sword, right clicking is blocking with shield. Simple enough?

I think someone did a while ago and maybe on a different thread, but maybe it was about something else. It does make it simpler, but I don't like the idea of crafting two items and not changing anything about them besides how you use them together.

They would both be visible on the screen at the same time? I only thought this because I didn't understand your proposal for the shield usage in the opening post. Automatically switching to it or something? Does it need to be in the hot bar or inventory? Maybe I just didn't get it because it's late xD
That doesn't make sense. You are just changing how you USE the sword. Crafting means "building".

1:
Obviously a durability enchantment.
2:
A fire resistance enchantment, like in the potions.
I just did. I don't want a mod, they're completely useless.

Oh wait, the shields were going to be 100% blockage if the attack hit them. The only stat would be durability and fire resistance.

There are some mods for SMP (granted my shield mod is not). Although I believe they have to be installed on both the server and client.
I think there is only a small chance majong will implement shields (and if they do probably not how you described)
