Well not reading every single post, im just gonna post my elaboration on this. Classes are an ok idea. I wouldn't mind them. But a more suitable alternative would be like the one above me by beardhat.
This is still a very flexible idea however. Even with this you could add certain abilities attained through achievements. Now achievements could just be an addition the EXP system, but they could also be a total different step into the game. Take a look at World of Warcraft for just a moment. I know this is a mmorpg, but im just using it as an example.
If you were to kill say 10 creatures, that could be the first tiered part of the system. Then there could be 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000 etc etc.
Now this would be the PvE style of gameplay. You could then involve PvP combat achievements at the same exponential order. Not only with PvP, but even with crafting. Maybe say after crafting 50 swords you could get an achievement. This means that having spare weapons wouldnt just take space in your stockpile room, but also count towards abilities and special unlockable items that could be had from achievements.
This would assure variety and interest would stay in the game. But achievements like these would be only for a long, maybe endless game of minecraft survival. Perhaps a long-term acihievement system is in order? Now we look towards Left For Dead 1. This involves a system of not-so-easily achieved tasks. Say surviving maybe 3+ creeper explosions in one game would be a viable option. Elaborating on this there could be other miscelaneous achievements. Say like, having 25 friends on your friend list. I know this is all sounding like a RPG, and Notch says it wont ever turn into a big RPG like WoW. But i think he needs to consider all the extra gameplay and content he could add to this game.
People prefer different aspects of different games though. This is just my opinion on this.
P.S. Sorry for such a long post, i just really thought it needed to be said.

Minecraft... a game about love, passion, betrayal and the journey for revenge.. and coal..
Ability EXP sounds good I guess. However I must point out that any system where leveling is involved inevitably creates a culture where if you aren't a munchkin character you can't compete with anyone else (PVP or PVE) and it ruins the ability to play the game any other way but the mathematically perfect and proven way to play (reference: any MMORPG). It usually turns into a hostile environment for newbie players as well because they will wont be able to contribute as much with their inferior equipment.
Maybe I just have a hate on for MMORPG's but I've noticed this trend in a couple I've played. Minecraft should stay true to it's accessibility to everyone.

I like ability EXP but if you haven't noticed Minecraft is a sandbox game. You want this... then go play Runescape. This isn't an RPG this is a building game.
This game should be kept fundementally generalized. What i mean is simple.
This game already has the "abbillity" of classes because people through their carried equipment and skill are already more inclined to do curtain things then others. As we expand upon the base of the game it will become more apperent to how inferior speacalization would be.

You can go ahead and move at the speed of light, But i will move at the speed of darkness.
This game needs less crap like classes, land claiming crap, and in general things that are over complicating the game. This game should be a game where you can do whatever you want, be whoever you want to be, and have no stupid restrictions. This game should not be a game where people can brag about how they are "level 50 wodecuttr lololo." I want this game to turn out like a fun game that is almost completely player based, not like some generic MMO where the only distinguishable difference is the fact that you can build things.
I don't believe in classes. This isn't World of Warcraft, survivors should be able to do anything to make sure they... well... survive.
Last thing I want to do is regret making myself a fighter. Grab a pickaxe to mine some stone for a house, "You can't, you're not a miner." "FUUUUUUUUUUUUU-"
NO. This game would be terrible with classes. It's all about being able to build and mine and fight. Plus, What if the towns under attack, Your a miner, You got up to defend, OH WAIT, Your not a fighter.
I would hate classes in minecraft.
No. Just... no.
Minecraft is a free game. Do whatever you want, without restrictions such as "classes"
But, if this free will style of gameplay will make role playing very lame (people would just craft tools in site instead of going to the smith) then some kind of a class system would be a good server option.

Trust me, if I want to Roleplay, I will NOT do it here in the server. The post-length is severely limited and it restricts my ability to write paragraphs.
But the whole point of Minecraft, if you guys missed the latest blog post, is about emergent story telling.
Classes pidegonhole you into playing a certain role. They're no more useful than skills. This is not an RPG, nor is it TF2, so please, leave it for the modded servers and out of the general distribution.
I think classes would ruin this game as they do on every game they exist, having classes imply on having limits and fixed roles, a person using a "miner" class would not be allowed by other players to do anything else but mine because thats his main role, even being able to do everything else.
A game without classes open largers horizons and give to the player more freedom so he can do whatever he wants instead of being stuck in a single role.
Classes in games where there is pvp are a bad idea also, as they must be constantly balanced every update, and even in games where classes are very well balanced there are always players who exploit these little differences.
The term sandbox refers more to the mechanics of a game and how, as in a physical sandbox, the user is entertained by his ability to play creatively, boundless of artificial structural constraints, and with there being "no right way"[5] of playing the game.

Having structured classes adds more, well, structure to the game. That is the last thing that should be happening. If you want an RPG, go play an RPG. If Notch ever decides to open source this (which I sure hope he does eventually), program it yourself.
