First of all, I played for the first time last night, and pre-ordered last night. This game blew me away. I was sold the second my map loaded and I saw the sheer size of it. Not to mention the trees and growing grass. This was a huge step up from Infiniminer for me, and it doesn't even have most of the features implemented yet! This is easily the most fun I've had in a long time and I'm looking forward to upcoming additions. Awesome job.
I've heard that survival mode will have an end goal. Does this mean the game will actually end when it's reached, or will it come at you Majesty style with a "Continue Playing" button?
I'd love such an option to be included. I really enjoy sandbox, but I also want survival elements in it. For example, being able to build whatever I want in sandbox is cool, but part of the fun for me is hunting for the resources to build these things, and dealing with dangerous obstacles.
What do you think? Does anyone know if this is planned?

I like what this suggestion essentially is: unlimited survival. I think it should be handled a little differently, though. Maybe at the beginning of a new survival game you can decide to play in Normal mode (goal-oriented) or Hardcore (see how long you can last). The latter option might include steadily increasing difficulty.

I'm not too sure. Steadily increasing difficulty sounds fine as an option, but if that's the only way I can play as long as I want, I don't want to have to hide in a tower or find some exploit to do it.
While it'd be fun to see how long you can last with the difficulty ramping, I'd like normal survival with an endless mode as well.

Is sandbox mode going away? I mean, we could add new gametypes, ones which ultimately end, without removing sandbox, no?
Sandbox is here to stay, and is sure to see some added features. Survival is a game mode with resource collection and maybe player needs. It's also planned to have an end-game. A goal that the players reach to "win" survival. What I want is an option to keep playing survival after this end-game, which would in a way make it a more challenging sandbox.

There used to be a HL2 mod that was a free-ended survival mode. The server would simply reset every 3 hours or so. I agree that the best part about survival is building a base and seeing how elaborate you can make a functioning city (because that's what it winds up coming down to, actual cities) rather than working to defeat a boss of some sort.
It definitely appeals to me to experiment with the number of players and the length of time in which the people can support the game's growth. Too few and little is built, as everyone would be on resource collection (I could see that a lot of construction would be going on underground rather than above it, which increases the risk of flooding, etc). On the other hand, too many people and resources are used up quickly, forcing more underground to mine, which increases accidents, such as tunnel flooding or magma encounters. Also, with enough people mining, more building could be done above ground by non-miners.
It mind end up being a sort of microcosm of a society, showing how numbers affect workforce and resource use. Could be very interesting!
