I have some great ideas for mine craft. Shame I can't access IRC... someone else will have to point this topic out to notch for me. anyway, Great ideas.
1. XYZ co-ordinate setting. it's not for spawn points, it for setting the size of maps. Say, x=100, y=200, z=300. That would make the map 100 across, 200 up/down, and 300 depth. Simple enough idea, right? Imagine x=100, y=12, z=2. you could make the first level from mario!
2. How to fix the water problem? Make water and 'source water'. source water reacts the same as the current water, and water you can place like any ordinary block. Another simple idea (the same could work for lava).
3. A new admin command: ghosting. If you "ghost" someone, they become transparent so you can tell they're ghosted, and they can't add/destroy blocks. Also there could be a /ghostall command that makes it impossible for peple to destroy your hard work. Solution for griefers, but what could you do to stop people from boxing the spawn point?
Just some simple ideas. I don't know if they could work in practice, but in theory, it'd work, wouldn't it?
I like the coordinate idea. The water could work but I don't know if I want place-able water in the hands of the enemy (or even really myself, even the sponge makes me nervous to be honest; no more danger thrill while tunneling).
Don't know about the ghosting. Perhaps with ghost on by default and /unghost an admin command that you can activate for people you trust.

That wouldn't work for larger public servers like Reddit which usually always has about 15 people in there.

Wait, I don't understand. Why not? Too much workload for a server admin?

Yeah, wolfram, i think i didn't make the water thing clear enough, maybe? you can only place water, not source water. maybe only the admin can place source water?

Do you mean that placed water wouldn't flow? That wouldn't be so bad.

Ehhhh... I don't know where you learnt your coordinates but x is width, y is lenght and z is height.
We aren't using CARTESIAN co-ordinates, we are using NORMAL co-ordinates. You know, ENGLISH? TYPE TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS? Cartesian is for another subject entirely. Besides, Wikipedia can be edited by ANYONE, so it's not necessarily correct. For all we know, you might have just edited the page yourself. We can't know for sure.
I agree with Grif, nobody's ever going to agree on which directions x,y, and z are. As can be seen by the 4 posts above mine. But either way, you're all wrong, x is height, z is depth, and y is length. And of course w for the imaginary dimension.

If someone makes a large castle/building/whatever completely out of flammable materials they DESERVE to be killed, robbed, or "griefed".

Relic of a bygone age.

I'm willing to bet that server administration would have less work unghosting than they currently do banning half-again their max population.

Z is depth.
Of course no one can (nor will they ever) agree on this.
Both work. Just don't be using both at the same time.
