The compass could be useful. A lot of times I want to get somewhere because there is an awesome maze that needs to be tested, and I just can't find the place, because I have no idea which way to look.. Usually what happens is that we build huge piles of whatevers to find each other. Doesn't work when the whole map is a huge pile of whatever.
About the Mini-Map, well, you know what I'm talking about. Doesn't have to show anything except where North is and other players in a variable vicinity (dunno, 10-20-50-100-250-500 blocks? or something..) Also, variable "fixed or rotating" map would be good.
And when I say POI, I mean Point of Interest. You make something, like a huge underground sex-cave and want to show it to others or want to enslave them for yourself or whatever, you just put a POI block down.. so your friends can find it! And not to say, YOU remember where you put that awesome hole you just dug but covered because you wanted all the lava for yourself the next day as well.
I don't know how hard these would be to implement. And maybe they don't even need to be in Alpha. But would be awesomely nice.
Comments and ideas?
as a side note, I know that this would bring up an issue of griefers finding your stuff more easily and making a pie out of it in a matter of seconds, but thats in the game too. Unfortunately.
I can understand a sort of radar to show the relative positions of your friends (or monsters, in survival), but the Minecraft world is too 3d to allow for an effective minimap. It crossed my mind as well.
Well, if the world build in game works anything like it does in omen, and I have a good idea that it does as a matter of efficiency, then all the world really is in the background is multiple layers of image files, with each pixel representing a block, and a particular color representing the block type.
that said, all the game would have to do is display some form of flattened version of this image stack, and your position in an x/y fashion overhead. While I'm no coder, in comparison to the other feats of creation Notch has done in the game, that would be a lesser challenge.
Infiniminer, to my knowledge, employed the same build concept, and its radar functioned fine. Granted, it didn't have an actual map, but I'd put good money on it working that way in order to place the beacon on the radar, not to mention the player locations.
I think maps and compasses are good ideas, but they should be something that you have to craft first, rather than something that everybody just starts with.
Well, my thought on that was that everyone would start out with the compass and map, or at least the compass so directions could be given from one player to the next, and that the map would have a standard "fog of war" that most games do.
You make something, like a huge underground sex-cave
LOL This made my day! Thanks Scribble.
Also, I love the idea of a mini-map, but I'd want a toggle button for it.

i LOVE the mini-map idea. i used to use a hack (b4 the update) that had a mini-map in it. i also host a server (Mario World). the mini-map was very helpful in keeping track of where everyone is at. i can see there movements and get an idea if they are griefing or not. i would really love to get it back.
Maps and compasses would make navigation so much easier.
But in survival mode I think that getting lost is part of the fun and adds to the feeling that you are truly trying to survive. That's why I think maps and compasses should only exist as craftable items as far as survival is concerned.
When it comes to free build mode i couldn't care either way.
i have restored to operation the client with the mini map. i am not sure who made it originally but i have gotten it to mostly work with the new minecraft update. it still has issues with new blocks but thats an easy fix.
if no one has seen this client then ill explain. the mini-map would open in a separate window and would give you a birds eye view of the whole map along with player names and positions. it has some limitations but those might be able to be fixed.
i would prefer not to release it because it would bypass the nice hack restrictions the WoM client has (ie -hax +hax).
no fear because i have also found out how to incorporate this mini map into the WoM client. i have an email into the creators of the WoM client to see if they would like me to give them the info on how to do this.
i don't know how many people would actually be interested in this kind of feature. this thread didn't seem to last long the first time around.
You can use the clouds as a compass. Just look at the direction they're moving in and say that's North.
The Cloud Compass is a very good idea, it would make it so much more fun using the clouds instead of just looking at a simple circle with N E S W around it. Plus it would make it much more challenging.

Talent didn't go anywhere, it just gets lost in all the noise. You have to find it.
I'd be happy with a simple N that would slide left and right when you turn. Clouds are great and all but 90 perc of my time is spent underground in a 512x512 cave system, and hell I get lost in there using Omen even.
I DESPERATELY request that at the very least we get a compass to help us find our way! I am thoroughly, utterly, completely, and totally lost underground without narry a clue as to which way is out in this circular redundant hellhole of a cavern! And I can't even so much as use Omen to peek at the damnable layout to find which way is the right way! D8<
Actually, omen just came out with a new version compatible with .mclevel s. you can't change anything or save it without all your chests becoming broken, but at least you can look at the level.
Don't like the mini-map idea, or anything that tells you your position or the position of other players. I prefer relying on using landmarks to be aware of your surroundings. The possibility of getting lost is part of the challenge. If you're playing with friends, having to name areas would encourage more cooperation. I like the idea of an in-game map (that doesn't reveal position) and compass though.

The sun should be good enough as a compass, and to draw maps.
