Can be placed by right click, picked up by punching. Provides wilderness shelter, allowing the player to sleep through the night unmolested. When placed has a light level 14.
Backpack
When worn on the chest slot, provides an additional 12 inventory slots. If picked up and placed in the inventory or world, items in back pack are not lost. They are, however, not accessible till the back pack is worn again ("back" slot prefered").
Saddle
Simply put, makes the dungeon reward (lol) craftable. Will have much better use when they put in real ridable critters.
Quiver
Allows the player to reduce 4 stacks of arrows to a single inventory slot. Must be worn in the chest slot to give access to the arrows. Would be better to have a "back" slot added.
With these implemented, you'd have more decorative options than just paintings. You'd have a "peaceful" way to get string with out dungeon diving. A player could take a nomadic approach to the game with the tent and backpack, allowing the player to not have to set up a home, but rather carry that home with them!
Not to mention, it makes a couple items with little use into something worth obtaining.
I'm still thinking of things to use gold and lapis with to make them more useful. Maybe come up with some stuff in the comments.
Also, these where pretty quick to list, as they where on my mind. This may and should not be the only things wool and leather are used for. Again, use the comments to elaborate on new and interesting stuffs.
I think of Christmas as a happy time, It's the only time of the year when every man and woman sees each other as equals. Even if it hasn't put any gold or silver in my pockets I say it has done me good and will do me good and there for I say god bless it! ~Scrooge's Nephew.
I defineltely would like the cape idea, would save Notch from the hassle of having people beg for capes.... Anywho maybe for the cape you could customize it just like you can customize skins?
Wool
Current uses:
Would use an art file for complex designs (like pictures) or colored wool for basic designs
Simple reverse crafting. 1 wool = 4 string
pants
skirt / kilt
dress
cape ("back" slot required)
Colored wool produces colored clothing
LEATHER

How to keep an idiot busy:look above
Good suggestions!
I just hate that my choices are Gold block and Powered rail for something so difficult to obtain.
Though I would think making gilded frames for paintings would require a few nuggets, rather than an entire ingot.

I figure some will use the clothing, some won't. My skin, for example is custom made to go with the texture pack that I use:
