I don't know... perhaps the sea floor and scout areas for mines or bases? And research the sea floor, none of the boats or ships so far have really been aimed at base scouting/sea floor scouting.
It should be fast so it can double as a spy ship one a factions/role play server... Spy on your enemies with the Spy-O-Boat 3000!
How would you research the sea floor? And the spy -O-boat 3000 sounds fun could i have one?

Really boats that are huge would be awsome and adding another small boat that can fit 1-5 peaple which is not much better than the origanel because you cant fight with
them unles bows count plus in real life a small boat in the ocean would sink once it was out of sight from the harbor because waves in the middle of an ocean can reach 40 feet(I wached a video) so in real life a small boat would sink.
I don't know how you would research the sea floor... dive suits would really be the only way but they don't really fit with minecraft, I think that they might need to just work as scout and spy ships.
Enough room for 3 or 4 people to live, a medium sized cargo area (for samples and such) enough cannons to defend against attackers and a special room that is where all the maps would be kept called the charting room (it would be special for charting new areas, one of the main uses of scouts)

I'd just like to say I am really pleased with how boats are going to be coming along in 1.9; the boats from Pocket Edition are going to be implemented on PC in this latest update:
This will allow boats two seat two entities, and introduces the implementation of paddles in with the boat (though you can't go back to using your hands).
Sure, it's not sails and big walk-around ships (yet!), but it sure feels like a step in the right direction! Kudos, Mojang!

There probubly going to work there way up like first the pe boat, then a smaller 5 person boat, then a 10 person boat with a sail and chest, then a 10 person boat with sails cannons and a chest, then the giant 30-40 persone boat with alot of cannons and sails.
We know its possible, in one way or another because the ships mod by Cuchaz lets you walk around, I'm not being one of those "We have a mod to do that" people but its a good proof of concept for this, showing it is possible.
Not everything works on it, few mod blocks operate on the ships and a few vanilla blocks don't work but it does show it will be possible.
Link incase you didn't see it in the MCF news a few posts back

If you do ever get around to making this mod (which I'm sure you will) plz plz plz make it for 1.8, I just don't wan't another cool mod to be for 1.7.10
Also you should make pirate mobs that spawn randomly in the sea on ships that are automatically hostile to you.
You have so many Ideas, you should start making this mod now!
This is NOT A MOD. The illustrations may look convincing (for a bunch of photoshopped models made in Sketchup :p) but I have repeatedly, in this suggestion, mentioned it as an idea and rarely even mentioned the word 'mod'. Please stop asking how to install this. Plus, we're in the Suggestions forum. That tell you anything?

So, with 1.9 finally coming around, I've had a lot of fun. I've spent most of the time playing around with the Elytra, which is just fantastic. I've spawned in a command book that lets me ascend higher, allowing me to effectively fly with it (though it would be awesome to have 'natural' sources of lift, like lava lakes or large rock outcroppings during the day).
But what really caught my eye was the boats. And it wasn't just the amazingly smooth controls, or the variation in wood type, or even the fact that you can carry passengers and animals with it. What caught my eye was the difference in height and depth between the outside of the boat and the inside:
If you look on the outside of the boat, you'll see it rises only 3 pixels above the water's surface.
Inside the boat, it's about six pixels deep.
This may not look like much, but it's actually solved an important issue with Boats Evolved that I sometimes worried might not have a fix due to the game engine. The water is being hidden, somehow, by the interior of the boat. If this is possible, then this solves a major hurdle of being able to access the lower decks of the larger boats. It would likely also be possible to completely disable the swimming effects whilst below deck (and technically underwater), allowing players to walk around and access those decks as if they were on dry land!
This idea is suddenly far more feasible than I thought!

Check out Boats Evolved; the fancy huge customizable boats Notch tweeted about brought to life!
This is a very good suggestion. But I feel that it would change vanilla too much. It feels like a mod, with GUIs that are difficult to understand, unlike the current simple GUIs. Furnaces, crafting tables, the inventory etc. all are in the same style. Your GUIs, other than having the correct font and general shape, looks complicated and very different from the norm. Also, there is a reason that you can't craft a house, for example. Even though it might look more realistic than a block-built one, there is no way to innovate with it. Your boat idea has the same issue. All boats are the same. In order to make such a change well received, it needs to fit in with Minecraft's design. The boats need to be block-built or at least block expandable beyond merely having slots where chests, beds, and crafting tables can be added. Many people have already built amazing ships, the only problem being that they are static. If large boats were added, it would need to be a feature to ADD to these builds, rather than making them obsolete. This will allow skilled builders to make whatever sort of boat in whatever style they can imagine.
I kind of wish there was a galley in this suggestion, possibly powered by npc rowers.
Those would fall under the extra non-linear ship blueprints detailed in the description, which would be found in places like dungeons, strongholds, or even traded from villagers
The problem is, Minecraft cannot comprehend moving blocks like the chests in the boat unless they are temporarily turned into FallingSand entity. I advise Mojang to make the chests chest-in-minecarts.
But good idea.
I also think that the new things (eg hammer, plating) in this should be used for things other than boats.
And I think this would be a good addition for Minecraft 2.0 (or 1.0 while this version becomes Gamma).
I've been gone from the forums for some time, so forgive me if my memories of the earlier details escape me.
@0bsidianWolf
It wouldn't have to be a *literal* Minecraft chest; it could be a *chest-like* part of the boat model. The boat, as an entity, could implement the IInventory interface and provide access to any inventory-management features. Or so I assume.
Perhaps "boarding a ship" (especially one that allows for multiple crew slots) is done in the same fashion as opening a GuiScreen; there may be a role for a commander who sets a long-range destination; a navigator who pilots the vessel toward the destination; a quartermaster who does what the traditional quartermaster does; and so on. Any more crew could be boarding parties and defenders, if you wanted to go the route of piracy or such.

they seriusly need to add pirates mobs so single player battles are possible don't you think and crew members so single player sailing is easier
should there be a base ship that goes only 30 or 15 blocks a minute with like 2 or 3 storries not incuding the top deck
Boats should not just dissapear after 1 hit with a cannon.

Unfortunately, no. But you can sort of work around this by putting a lead on a donkey and taking it with you in the water.
