I'm sure you've heard an idea with teleporters before, and I'm sure they've all been imbalanced. The main reason I can see for this is the lack of limits on range, but I don't want a teleporter for long-distance travel. Long distance travel should take a while and be somewhat dangerous.
What I want them for is inside buildings. Personally I'd just use them as an alternative to ladders and stairs, but they have a lot of potential to be used in adventure maps where you don't want the player to be able to orientate themselves or space constraints are an issue. While I'm not sure what the exact distance limits should be, I'd suppose 25 blocks would be reasonable.
Each teleporter pad would have a twin pad made at creation that it links to. Provided they're placed within range they teleport to each other but don't interact with any other pad. These two always link to each other so while you can pick them up and move them (with a pickaxe would make sense) if one is destroyed by say falling in lava the other is useless and may as well be destroyed too. On top of that, a teleporter pad can only stack with it's twin, so it's easy to see which two pair up. The pair of teleporter pads would be crafted like so, with diamonds representing Ender pearls:
The pads themselves would be activated by standing on them and right clicking, and there's a requirement that it's twin is unobstructed (has two blocks of air above it). An obstruction simply means it doesn't function, much like a chest won't open if it doesn't have a space of air above it.
I'd make the pads themselves half-blocks, but that's really just an aesthetics thing. I think they'd look chunky standing a full block out of the ground but they should still stand out a bit (and raising them off the ground is a good way).
I would like to improve this idea to maybe post up on GetSatisfaction, so all feedback and help improving it would be wonderful.
actually, in 1.9 ender pearls can be trown, and when they land you will be teleported
I am aware of this. What I'm proposing is a permanent thing that can be re-used; you have to gather a bit more for it but it pays off in the long run.
With Ender pearls, you can only teleport to where you throw them. A pair of these pads can teleport to each other even through blocks as long as the pads themselves aren't obstructed. While you don't take damage when using the pads (you do with Ender pearls) you lose the ability to go on-the-fly, and you also have to be able to access both places first to place them down.
Use ender pearls to charge the teleport? Would be a fair balance IMO. You don't want to replace ladders or stairs entirely.
Charging is a pretty cool idea. I'd think the charge would be shared between each pad, and if you used either one it would be subtracted from a shared total. You could charge them by right clicking on one of the pair with an Ender pearl in your hand.
Recharging could get to be a nuisance, though, so I think having a reasonable starting usage number would be good and having the Ender pearls be worth a good amount of charges would help. I'm thinking 150 uses (that would be back and forth 75 times) to start with and each pearl gives 50 more uses to the pads. I'm curious to know what you think about that as it was your idea, perhaps my numbers are too high for your taste?
I think the charge system is fair, and you could have a visible meter on the pads that show roughly how many uses are left. Or you could open it like a furnace/chest, and insert more pearls, each having 10-15 uses, and limiting pearl stack size to 16.
The range also seems reasonable, and maybe you could add a "redstone repeater" type object to broaden the range?
I also that that having the pad be a half block high is too much, maybe a 1/4 block, or just as high as a pressure plate.
I'd love to see this either in the game, or in mod form!
For adventure modes, a block of sand/gravel could be pressure pad activated over the other teleporter to render it inactive, until a piston is used to push it off (adds to more of a puzzle theme).
To begin with, I really think this is a good idea. What you have to remember is Minecraft isn't modern, it has swords and bows. Let alone having something past our pressent time :tongue.gif: I could easily see this becoming a mod, and for adventure maps this would be extremely useful. I'm not sure if Mojang would add this to the vanilla. But this could definitely get some moders coding.
Will it have sound effects?
Will it have animations?
Just a couple of things to think about, but I like the crafting recipie (as endermen teleport, it would make sense for their pearls to help you with teleporting.) And I like the idea. I hope this becomes a mod :smile.gif:
*EDIT*
Forget the mordern thing, it's not exactly a high tech teleporting, it's Ender teleporting!
I don't really see Minecraft as being set in the past so much as just being a different reality, so I don't quite consider things in terms of our time. I do try and compare ideas to the current technology level in Minecraft though, and considering teleportation (the player teleporting with Ender pearls, at that,) is already going into the game I don't see this as too far-fetched.
I suppose it could have sound effects and animations, much like going into a Nether portal does, but they should be unique to teleporting. Maybe the animation that shows while teleporting could be colored like the Ender pearl is?
I must say, I'd prefer it be vanilla :smile.gif:. Mostly just because I play multiplayer more than singleplayer.

That is possible, I'd suppose, but I'm wondering how you'd open it instead of teleporting. I suppose if you were teleported by standing on it like you are with nether portals, the clicking could be to open it. I'm more inclined to thinking once you put the Ender pearls in they can't come out, it eats them so to say, but it opening and shutting would be fine too.
One thing you have to remember about the amount of pearls needed, though, is that Endermen are going to become much rarer (and probably more difficult to kill, Notch mentioned recently thinking they were too boring on his Twitter what with the upcoming nerf to their block-moving abilities).
I'm not sure how the repeater thing would work. Would you attach it to the teleporter? How would it know what range to extend?
I suppose I can see it being 1/4 a block. I think about 1/3 could be nice too, but I wouldn't be bothered if it weren't. I'd prefer it being thicker than a pressure plate, though, it would probably be best if it were slightly more apparent.

This could be a really fun idea. As far as your original post, I don't think making a paired set is really the right solution and the recipe is pretty light for 2 pads. That recipe is nice but it should only make one pad, to make them a little harder to get. Instead of having a paired set, I would propose using redstone and torches to connect and power their link. You link two teleporters by physically linking them with the redstone. To me that would seem a lot simpler solution that wouldn't need core changes to how stuff works.
I do agree with a distance cap though, I also have no clue what it should be, having them take you longer distances would negate the intended purpose of the nether.
As for the charging thing, I really am not into that, I prefer my idea of having to link and power the pads via a redstone connection to explain how they function. It just fits better with the rest of the current technology implemented so far.
I like it. Here's a thought, though. First off, I don't much care if the distance is restricted, so long as it has a balancing cost. Ender Pearls in the recipe are a good start to that (actually using diamonds would works as well), so is having it be a single two-way link. What would make it even better, though, is if it needed fuel. So, rather than teleporting when you right click, what about opening a GUI like a furnace, but only having a fuel slot? Whenever someone is teleported, it uses fuel. Possible fuel could include Ender Pearls (good for lots of uses), Redstone Dust (good for only one or two trips), and maybe Glowstone Dust. The pads could have a particle effect in the blocks over them when working, maybe spark or steam when obstructed, and give off weak light (like Redstone Torches) as long as the pair was linked. Finally, to keep it from being used as an instant escape from mobs, make the teleportation work like a portal; you must stand on the pad and wait several moments.

I was thinking about this some more, and I really don't think the stone slabs are the right base material. As there are already 2 materials associated with teleportation, they should be the ones that are used for the recipe, you had the ender pearls right, but the base should probably be obsidian to fit better with Minecraft lore.
Otherwise the recipe layout is good, just that little change would make them a bit more challenging to get, so as to avoid making easier to make stuff like ladders less useful. With this, you would indeed have to get at least 3 diamonds for a pick as a pre-req to gain access to making and using teleporters, as you would have to actually mine up obsidian blocks in order to use them in the recipe. This would help keep them out of the earlier game, and add another incentive/reward to mine and explore the deeper areas.

I like this, and you could add an item that is crafted with an ender pearl over redstone repeater to extend the range, that way there's a significant cost to it.
Or, instead of redstone, you could crush the pearls to make a redstone-type substance that only worked with the teleporters, but in the same manner as redstone.

You're right about them being a bit harder to get, I think. But I don't care for the redstone connection idea; part of the reason I suggested this in the first place is because a teleporter as such could be fairly unobtrusive in a building design. Still, when I update the OP I'll probably mention this idea as it is a good one.

I like the idea of them giving off weak light when they've got charges, maybe if it's possible the amount of light they give off could depend on how much charge they have? Like, say, anything with less than 20 uses left gives off a weaker glow than anything with more than 20 left? I'm also quite coming to like the idea of it being like going to the Nether and having a bit of a delay.
The fuel idea was touched on a few posts before, and I'm planning on adding it to the OP soon.

Absolutely agree with the idea of making it obsidian, that makes teleporters a bit harder to make and I agree they're not something you should be able to make before you can get diamond tools. Not a bad idea for the repeater object, though it almost sounds too easy to get. If we do go with your idea for Ender pearl dust, I suppose we could instead craft the repeater out of the dust (maybe not torches, though, we have no reason to put delays that I can think of) and obsidian as suggested in stead of slabs above.

Thought for the "Extender" object: Maybe, rather than making it out of a pearl and a repeater, you make it out of two repeaters and a pair of teleport pads? That way, it takes a significant amount of resources to make just one, and ensures that one cannot stockpile them prior to making actual teleport pads.
I don't want to sound like a troll, but you do know you can use a compass for short-range teleporting, right?
But this sounds like an awesome idea, compasses aside.
