That's right, talent fields. It comes from manygames. All of them being strategy, or RPG. But with the adventure update inplace, won't you need a little strategy anyways?
Talents fall under 3 catagories. Combat, Resource,and Charisma, each with its own set of perks, and buffs. There are many talents each doing an opposite from another, but you can only do one of the two.
I don't know if this is a good idea or not, but Ithink this could get overpowered in multiplayer. When you die, like Notch said,all of your skill points will go bye bye, but I would still find it overpoweredfor a guy max everything, and fight someone who has nothing. I find it unfair,so here are some ways I think we can nurf this a little.
A: You can only go under ONE talent tree! Once youput a single point on a tree, you can't put one on another tree!

B: With every perk there is an equal nerf!
Combat:
A little obvious, this field gives you abilities inattacking both mobs, and players. Some abilities could include:
Better crits! (Increase crit damage by 10%, max2)
xor (Not both)
More crits! (Increase chance for crit by 10%per level, max 2)
(B: Debuff Crits do 10% less damage)
xor (Not both)
Better crits! (Crits do 10% more damage max 2)
(B: Debuff a Crit chance happens 10% less)
Fast shot! (Arrow pullback is reduced by .5 seconds per level, max 2.)
(B:Debuff (Arrows do 20% less damage per level) OR (Arrowslob more.)
xor (Not both)
Sniper! ( Damage is increased by 20% per level OR arrows firemuch more straight max 2)
(B:Debuff ( Arrow pullback takes 0.5 seconds longer per level.)
Heavy sword! (Damage is increased by 15% per level Max 2)
(B:Debuff time of invulnerability from player hit is increased by 15%)

Quick Slice! (Invulnerability time of player is reduced by 15%, max 2)
(B: Debuff Damage is decreased by 15% per level.)
Defensive! ( Blocks reduce 50% more damage!(Costs 2 points)
(B: Debuff Damage is decreased by 30%)

Prospector! ( 5% chance of double drop of all mined items per level Max 4)
(B: Debuff Mining is 10% slower per level)
xor (Not both) Quick Pick! (10% increase in mining Max 4)
(B: Debuff 5% chance per level it will drop NOTHING! OR! Pickaxes damage 10% quicker)
Butcher! ( 20% chance of double drop when killing passive mobs, max 2)
(B: Debuff You do 20% less damage on passive mobs.)
xor (Not both) Hunter! ( Always crit on a passive mob! )
(B: Debuff 30% Chance the mob will drop NOTHING!)
Chicken friendly! (On level 1, chickens will lay eggs quicker when you are within 20 blocks of them, at level 2 there is a double chance a thrown egg will become a chicken.)
(B: Debuff there is a 40% chance killing a chicken will drop NOTHING per level! )
xor (Not both) Puppy lover! ( Each level, chance of a bone getting a wolf to be friendly is increased by 30% Max 2)
(B: Debuff Wolves have 5% less health per level.)
Tree hugger! (At level 1, saplings grow 20% quicker, at level 2, placing bonemeal on grass has a chance to grow small mushrooms, 10%.)
(B: Debuff cut trees 15% slower per level)

Lumberjack! (At level 1, logs, and refined wood cuts 20% faster, at level 2 cutting a log has a 25% chance to drop 2 logs)
(B:Debuff at level 1, bonemeal has a 30% chance to fail on saplings, at level 2, Trees take 20% longer to grow into trees)
Charisma!
This is difficult to think of perks, because npc's aren't out yet! So I'm going to throw out ideas of what they could do, and hopefully they're ok!
Boaster! (Quests reward better! Each level you get more! (Max 2)
(B: Debuff quests are more difficult Each level, it gets more difficult. (Example, bring 7 enderpearls instead of 5))

I think you nerfed it TOO much. Like, some of these nerfs defeat the purpose of the buff. I think, instead of nerfing things in that specialization, you should nerf things so that, for example, if you specialize in mining your fighting skills go down. Otherwise great post, i would like to see this(but with different nerfs) implemented
I don't mind RPG and RP skill trees, but people don't get that there doesn't always need ot be a downside. the point of a skill tree is that the downside is losing out on the other skills. the OR is the downside.
