I apologize if this has been suggested before. I've searched the forum and couldn't find a similar suggestion.
This is my suggestion for "Grates" in Minecraft.
Grates allow the flow of liquids but stop mobs and items in their tracks.
Grates would come in two different types: (Keep in mind I'm no artist so these are crude depictions. :tongue.gif:)
Wooden Grates, which allows water to flow through the grate, but items and mobs will be stopped by the grate.
Lava will destroy Wooden Grates.
Iron Grates, allow water and lava to flow through the grate, but items and mobs will be stopped by the grate.
Lava does not destroy Iron Grates.
It is a simple concept, but brings lots of new possibilities to Minecraft creations and devices without being a huge "game changer", which is generally a good thing.
All criticism is appreciated, and make sure to vote this thread up if you support my suggestion! With your help we could make this happen!
We already have this. It's called putting open trap doors in the floor so that water (or lava) will pass over it but mobs won't.
You're using an entirely different concept. Water doesn't flow through open trap doors, it flows over them. This isn't what my idea is designed for. Grates allows water to flow into/through the grate, but mobs cannot go through the grate.
Possibly it could work like Soul Sand slowing a Mob. Or, you could Craft a Trapdoor with an Iron Ingot to make these.
How could the grate slow mobs? It's designed like a criss-cross wood or iron, which allows water to flow through the holes, but the holes are way too small for mobs. I don't think using iron on a trapdoor would fit the concept either.

I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades
Unknown to death, Nor known to life
Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything
So as I pray, Unlimited Blade Works

I'm suggesting it be added to Vanilla.

It's the same thing, when you think about it.
