As many of you probably do, I like the music in Minecraft-C418 makes some lovely ambient music. However, for many it gets dull after a while, and many people eventually turn it off.
People have suggested that the music could be changed so it plays when certain events occur-at the end/start of a day, when you are under attack, when you find a large dark area like the "ambiance" we have now, etc.
However, this would still leave the problem that made me turn off my music-the songs never change, and after a while you'll have heard all of them many times over. So I propose a different solution-randomly generated music.
It would have rules for rhythm, the chance of some notes following others, and other procedures to make sure it didn't end up a mess-possibly, different sets of rules for different situations, though that's a bit of a stretch.
I think if this was pulled off well, it'd make a perfect fit for MC. People always have their own stories about how they found their first cave, what they built, etc., and this would make each person's experience more individual.
The downside to this is how difficult it may be to code, and performance issues. So I've included a poll. If you have time, please explain your answers.
dude... please learn have least what GENERATED means.
you cant do it in music. it will be just random sounds.
sorry man. this is a sad idea...
Not true. I've heard computer generated music before. Did you even listen to the video I posted?
It's not completely random, there would be rules to it to make sure it wouldn't be garbage. Kind of how like games like Minecraft, Terraria, and Spelunky have procedures so they aren't just a random jumble of terrain.
Also, "please learn have least what" sentence structure works before you tell me to "please learn have least what" generated means.
If you need MORE proof it's possible... http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=2236.0
A somewhat jazzy 8-bit sounding piece. Needs some work, sure, but it's not just random noises.
Also Spore(failure as it was) had nice sounding procedurally generated music, so there's an example of a non-indie game using it.

The last 90 years of music would disagree with you.
Looking over this, I think I'm going to sig that, just so no one ever forgets about that grammatical meltdown.
It's happeneds to you when you go to the suggestions thread for to long. You get so mad you can't type properly.
*facepalm*
Alright then, Mr. KnowItAll, What does generated mean?
