I support everything except the sky dimension.
I feel like that would reduce the fear level if you WANTED to go to the sky dimension.
I`d Love to be backing away from one in my tunnel.
I know my door is right behind me a few meters just a bit longer...
IT`S CLOSED!

The sky dimension thing wasn't my idea, it was Newt's.
And imagine trying to get down the hallway and close the door as the world gets more and more distorted, twisting the passage into something like this:

... Would you be able to "see" it if there was a COMPLETLY sealed glass area? Creeper's don't, but you can still see them, so... Would endermen? And I also KNOW that they would engage in a staring contest through a wooden door... and maybe able to **** the door up and THEN charge you...
Just imagine coming out of the mine after finding a few diamonds, and then seeing an enderman or whatever... And then you're about to open the door with your diamond sword and then POOF it destorys the door and you're being rushed by endermen and creepers and skeletons... oh muh gawsh.
I personally beleive that Minecraft is the story of a young boy or girl that's in a coma, and he/her is dreaming about... basicly that... I mean, think about it... Living exploding green stubby-legged bastards... Living skeletons... ZOMBIES... and giant spiders... And now walking squid-men that charge your ass and destory your house... And cause you to go insane. Why the thing that can destory blocks (maybe), Why not the legal single-player griefer?

Hmm, i like it.
Although, i think it should be more random distortions, as opposed to a steadily building wavy distortion. Also, i think it should get worse the closer you get, not the longer you look. Players shouldn't be punished for just trying to look at a mob, but it will still make it harder to get into kill range without breaking eye contact.
The logic is that it's a defence mechanism. People draw parallels between the endermen and the weeping angels, but we forget that the weeping angels were completly invincible while in this locked state. With the endermen, this is how we kill them. They should have some other form of defence, such as distorting the vision of players who appear to be hostile(approaching them).
I was just thinking this! Actually, if you take a look at one of Notch's youtube channels, there's a video he posted about vertex distortions eaaaaaarly on in development (probably 2 or 3 years ago?).
If this were changed a bit to be more randomized, it'd really make staring at the Endermen hard!

i kinda agree with this idea of it being a self-defense mechanism of the Endermen, because i was kinda wondering how hard it would be just to stare at one and walk towards it so you can just stab it to death. this would make it hard to kill one, and rewarding....
Anyways. New development in Endermen: I will never see my garage the same way again.
For I realized that at night, when looking into the garage from the in-house door with the garage light turned off, a pair of reflectors on a bike hanging from the ceiling look like Endermen eyes.

Enderman should not drop anything.
Notch wants people to fear them and never want to meet one, adding huge drops and rewards would just completely ruin the fear.
Getting away with your life would enough of a reward.
I agree with the idea, maybe just subtle waving of the background behind enderman though.
agreed, no drops. Otherwise people will just go enderman hunting. They wouldn't be creepey, they'd just be some other mob that you need to go kill to get what you want.
i was thinking of something, they should not only distort your view, they should mess with your view of your entire surroundings, such as adding hallucinations of other mobs trying to attack you if at night (and sounds for those mobs), or during the day, visions of other Endermen also trying to attack you. this would all be some last ditch attempt to get you to look away
could you be so kind as to share that banner with the rest of us. I would want to wear it.

After 10:30 PST, my IQ drops to around that of a shovel, please disregard anything I say after aforementioned time, it will likely not make any sense, and is best ignored.

i thought about this a bit, and it occurred to me that the rate of distortion should be dependent both on distance and length of time staring at the Enderman. if you are really far away, it would take much longer for it to distort, but if you're 5 feet away....it's going to get crazy really fast!

It's more likely though.

Off topic: what should Endermen drop?
There's a suggestion thread for that. The OP of that thread suggested a primary component of a teleportation pad.

Here's the BBcode for a version that links to the topic:
I guess you're right. But this brings the question: what takes you there?
I really hope the distortion is implemented, it wouldn't be near as scary if you could just stare at him forever without any consequences.
