The Enderman already seems like it will be an amazingly creepy new addition to Minecraft. It haunts around, moving blocks and generally unnerving the player. As it already appears, Endermen spawn in packs, and move blocks. It's also possible that they could build with these blocks. Considering Notch's intention to give the game an endgoal though, I considered ways that the Enderman can bring this about.
I wrote this as sort of a narrative because it sounds better than me explaining how it "will" or "should" be.
Endermen spawn in certain areas that they deem low and level enough. They simply appear, ready to fulfill their duty. When they materialize, they single-mindedly go to work. They begin to pick up surrounding blocks and build them into a great tower. If you kill an Enderman, it does not respawn; the work of building simply goes about without it. If all of the Endermen die, the tower progress stops, and you cannot get another tower until you find another group of Endermen somewhere else. Everything the Endermen do is based on a pattern, the blocks they take from a giant hole around the base of their tower, the tower itself follows a strict pattern all the way to the top. When an Enderman picks up a block, they are automatically assigned to place it in a particular spot in the tower. They climb to that spot, and place the block. The tower is built progressively, a little each night, until it reaches the limit of the sky (which after update will hopefully be 512). Inside is a staircase that spirals all the way up. You can ignore this tower, going about your work obliviously, or you can climb it. Should you choose to climb it, you will be faced with the end boss of minecraft. I don't know what the end boss will be, that's for Notch to decide.
As for these images, this is just a tentative idea. Enderman tower algorithms could be much more complex than this, but I figured that since dungeons are just stone boxes, towers may be equally basic. It all depends on what Notch wants to program.
Suggestions? Maybe someone can think of something harder or more interesting, like a quest that the player must do to summon the end boss in conjunction with the tower idea?
i actually dont want a end goal in minecraft! minecraft is fun because you dont have to do anything specific, you just play the game! and it never ends! if theres an end goal, its no longer a survival game! its more of a strategy game after that, a game that doesnt last forever! would you rather keep playing your world, continuosly expanding it? or win, and the game is over?

Srry for double post.
Its not really an "end-game-goal" just a, side quest.
I Think it shouldnt end the game but give you a nice reward. Like A Sword or Bow with a special idea like the aether mod's Vamptire blade or lightning knife

It's not my idea to add an ending to the game, it was Notch's. I just like the idea and thought of a way to facilitate it.
Quote from Notch »
“In most roguelikes you never win the game because it’s too difficult. But that’s not why you play. You have the goal – you know it’s winnable as a driving motivator…
I think Minecraft is lacking that, which is why I want to add some kind of way to win. But I don’t expect people to actually win the game when they play. It’s going to be some kind of guiding purpose.”
Don't turn this into a "x would ruin minecraft" thread.

Yeah, I guess we couldn't really have an "End" to Minecraft in the sense that the game is over. It would be cool though if you got godlike powers for "winning" though.
Maybe we could be given the ability to fly? What would improve the game experience but not make it ridiculously easy?
I guess the virtue of Minecraft is that even with things like INVedit and MCedit, you can still fully enjoy the experience of building...
This is actually a really cool idea. As you went about your minecraft day, you'd slowly watch the tower build up, like the spire from Fable 2.
Yeah! Exactly my point. And if you don't want a giant looming death tower near your home, then (hopefully) kill the Endermen. The building of the tower gives a player time to build up supplies.

Meh, I'd really rather prefer not exactly flying, but just to be able to literally make Minecraft "Your World"

Like making the game into creative mode? Maybe creative mode is unlocked by beating survival? You have all of the blocks, and mobs, falls and lava can't hurt you.
