The Aether is not actually going to be offically added. A similar place is being made called the sky dimension, but it's not the Aether. That's a seperate mod in developement.
This changes things. I guess Notch wants to improve the Nether before he officially announces the Aether, err, Sky Dimension.
I haves few ideas for Minecraft gas blocks as well.
Diamond dust: An air block with tiny diamond dust particles in it. Spawns when a diamond block is mined/destroyed in all adjacent gasious blocks (including the block where the diamond was mined/destroyed). Damages the player 0.5 hearts every second if the top half of the player is in it. Despawns 5 seconds after spawning.
This makes diamonds a little more of a hazard to mine.
White smoke: A gasious block with a white tint to it. Spawns every 3 seconds after a torch is placed, replacing the air block that the torch is in. Will move up about 1 block per 2 seconds. If the block above it is solid, it will spread out in a NSEW fashion duplicating iteslf. The player will start to suffocate and have lightly impaired vision when the top half of the player is in the block. Despawns when it either hits the top block of the map or collides with another smoke block.
Light grey smoke: A gasious block with a light grey tint to it. Spawns when 2 white smoke blocks collide with each other, replacing the white smoke blocks. Will move up about 1 block per 2 seconds. If the block above it is solid, it will spread out in a NSEW fashion duplicating iteslf. The player will start to suffocate and have light-medium impaired vision when the top half of the player is in the block. Despawns when it either hits the top block of the map or collides with another smoke block.
Grey smoke: A gasious block with a grey tint to it. Spawns when 2 white and/or light grey smoke blocks collide with each other, replacing the smoke blocks. Will move up about 1 block per 2 seconds. If the block above it is solid, it will spread out in a NSEW fashion duplicating iteslf. The player will start to suffocate and have medium impaired vision when the top half of the player is in the block. Despawns when it either hits the top block of the map or collides with another smoke block.
Dark grey smoke: A gasious block with a dark grey tint to it. Spawns when 1 grey and 1 light grey or white smoke blocks collide with each other, replacing the smoke blocks. Will move up about 1 block per 2 seconds. If the block above it is solid, it will spread out in a NSEW fashion duplicating iteslf. The player will start to suffocate and have medium-badly impaired vision when the top half of the player is in the block. Despawns when it either hits the top block of the map or collides with another smoke block.
Black smoke: A gasious block with a black tint to it. Spawns when 1 black and/or dark grey and 1 grey, light grey or white smoke blocks collide with each other, replacing the smoke blocks. Will move up about 1 block per 2 seconds. If the block above it is solid, it will spread out in a NSEW fashion duplicating iteslf. The player will start to suffocate and have badly impaired vision when the top half of the player is in the block. Despawns when it hits the top block of the map.
Makes it so that mineshafts will need air vents, just like real life. Also, the spread out rate is 1 duplication every 3 seconds, and light decreases by 2 for each gas block it passes through, instead of 1.
New items!

He DID officially announce it.
BBCode Render failed due to reaching MaxNestingDepth(80) for Tag: spoiler
Then why did ShatteredLight say otherwise?
...and it explodes if we place a torch, lava near it,right?
If it does, make it very rare to find. If my shaft were to blow up in my face all of a sudden, I'd wiss my pants.
Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.

Thanks! I also support the idea (will probably make a new thread with my own version of it).
Wow.
You've got some ideas there.
Maybe Steve is slowlier if he wears a gasmask.
