What I see the trouble is, is that if there's only one, and the world is infinite.
I was thinking in single player mode since I don't play multiplayer much. But you could have the orb return to a cloudy orb again after a period of time allowing more people to try it.
I think a reward should not only be the armor and sword but a plane and machine guns ( with plane and gun mods included) then u could take the next adventure to fly up to the temple of sky and recover a lost treasure which should be a clock then the temple shakes and release a bunch sky mobs called ? ( that is the real name ) which have 1 heart but gain 1 heart every minute max of 10 hearts are 5 blocks long, 1 tall, and 2 wide, no wings but they bite u for an amount equal to their health divided by 2. and the only way to stop it is to survive for 4 or 5 days using only wood, dirt, and torches plus any sword and/or armor u might have. the reward is 64 TNT, 64 RAILROAD, 2 MINE CARTS, AND a full diamond set of armor plus sword. tell me what u thing

Like the mob concept, hate the whole "plane and machine gun" thing.
I love the idea, but what if, instead of the obelisk being underground, what if it was locked away in a certain biome. In this biome all hell would brake loose, strange mobs would roam the biome, forcing you to fight your way through, deeper into the biome. Then at the heart of the biome, there would be a naturally generated ancient ruin, and the obelisk would be located there. Once you activate the obelisk, the "fog" would spread outside this biome, infecting all land it comes across :biggrin.gif:
THINGS TO KNOW
1.) the biome would obviously be very far from spawn, to avoid easy access
2.) The biome would be a completely new biome, in which the sky turns dark
This... this is actually a GOOD IDEA IN THE SUGGESTIONS FORUM!?!?!?! :ohmy.gif:
If I have one problem with it, it's that there's only one obelisk in the entire Minecraft world. Personally, I think it would be better if there was one obelisk per, say, 100 chunk radius (I actually don't know how large that would be, so I apologize if that's ridiculous xD). That way the player could have a good possibility of finding the obelisk, but the likelihood that the player activates a dozen different obelisks and fills the entire world with fog because they were too stupid to do anything about it.

now that i read it the plane/machine gun thing, i hate it, it was 2:00 a.m. and i just finished watching the yogscast series for like the millionth time
This looka and sounds really promising, like a horror movie I really want ot take this cahllange on... and stop the fog. As well as peeing my pants :smile.gif: LOLZ or maybe poo.
The idea has been fleshed out a lot since I got here at my grandmas house.
I will be updating it tomorrow after I get back home.
heres a few things:
1.) I decided to go with teh compass idea. the special compass would point towards a randomly chosen coordinate approximately 2-3 kilometers away from any already generated chunks. this is where the obelisk will be.
2.) For a reward of defeating the fog, I think that you should get a certain object that is little more than a status object. Perhaps a cape? the fog Slayers cape could be a good reward.
KIND OF OFf TOPIC: Just got an idea; The Fog Slayers cape could allow you to craft an obelisk that creates fog about 20 blocks around it in every direction, and spawns the weaker kinds fog beasts inside of it? It could be a VERY useful SMP weapon.
Some kind of special power or ability gained from the Fog Slayers cape would be an awesome thing...
3.) NPC villages that are going to come in 1.8 should cower in fear at the fog. Most likely, Pigmen are going to be the villagers, and the should all hide inside when the fog comes. Of course, their houses would be eaten away by the Fog, and they should also try to fight the beasts and survive.
Maybe the villagers should sometimes become infected somehow and become a much more powerful breed of Fog Monster?
thats good but there should be a a helmet also that when equipped allows u to break any block with one punch ( with the exception being bedrock of course) that would be good for the fact u reigned surpreme against the evil monstrosities of the malicious fog

This seems like something that could potentially work in the adventure update. Although i agree wit the person who said the it should be above ground due to distance it would have to travel. All around a great idea and potentially a great game addition. Please try to contact modders to pitch your idea it would be wonderful to see a mod of this.
I like it.but a mod would be better and an option to turn it off for regular gameplay.

IT DOESN'T ACTIVATE UNLESS YOU GO TO IT AND ACTIVATE IT INTENTIONALLY.
There is no reason to add a check-list button or something for this, If you want to interact with you, then you craft the compass, go there, and remove the items from the chest. It's a much more seamless transition that way,
I added the need to craft a special compass, which would point towards randomly chosen coordinates that are about 5 kilometers away from any already generated chunks, causing you to need to make a journey to it.
I also added a rewards section to the OP: I decided to go with a cape that marks you as a fog slayer.
I am also thinking of having the cape give you the ability to transform into a 3 block tall werewolf-esque monster, that cannot use tools, weapons or armor, but has the melee damage of a stone sword and 15 hearts instead of 10. It runs at the same speed at a player, except you can hold shift to go on all fours and run at twice the speed.
I also thought of giving this monster the ability to walk up 1 block rises as if they were halfsteps, and letting the beast jump 2 blocks high instead of one.
After the first time you defeat it, if you wanted to activate it again, could it be made to where each successive activation causes a progressively higher level of difficulty? Also, maybe the ghost idea from a different topic could be a fog mob.

are you putting the obelisk on crying obsidian
