There are so many mods out there showing off new tools, armour and other misc items. I love all of them, but I tend not to use many mods as some make the default tools obsolete. However with this idea I felt that Notch could still add more tools that are new and/or better without adding more ores, (as my Minecraft would is massive and expanding out to generate more land is annoying) plus I think the ores are fine for now anyway.
It adds a more progressive setting to Minecraft and it can include these awesome tools and such that does give Minecraft more of a 'goal' to get more settled, get better tools sort of thing.
First this would be how an empty bookshef would look like when crafted, normal recipe minus the books.
Will conjure more screens of the empty bookshelf and its crafting inventory
Once placed and right-clicked on you would open up an inventory screen simular to the crafting bench screen, with a clickable button named, 'Knowledge!' at the bottom.
From there you would add say, 32 string, 64 flint and 64 feathers. Quite a difficult task for beginning right? Well from there you can click the button and all the resources will disappear, but the empty bookshelf will now be full and be uniquely coloured to distinguish it from normal bookshelves. From there you'll be exited from the screen and you can now right-click on the now full bookshelf and a magical thing will happen.
New crafting recipes will unlock!
A book will open with various pages with new crafting recipes. Say the 32 string, 64 flint and 64 feathers regards to new arrow recipes? Such as the various arrow variants of the Elemental Arrow Mod? The pages will show the recipes for making flame arrows, glass arrows, torch arrows etc.
These recipes would be locked if you do not have the 'Knowledge!' of arrows so you cannot prematurely craft flame arrows. From here we have a sense of progression as you will eventually get 32 string, 64 flint and 64 feathers through natural gameplay. I think this is a great way to add more to the game and more depth and it's a good way to integrate new stuff.
Obviously you should be able to destroy and replace the empty bookshelf and the 'filled' bookshelf and be able to replace it. You cannot store item in the 3x3 inventory and will pop out when you exit the screen. Each 'filled' bookshelf will have a unique look and be coloured differently.
