Had an idea today that addresses several problems at once:
1. Redstone is ludicrously common deep in the map. It's more common even than iron.
2. Redstone is the only overworld mineral that has no real-world equivalent.
3. Digging in the Nether is deadly dull. There's nothing to find.
Solution: Move redstone to the Nether. It even fits in with glowstone, and has an appropriate color! Since it would be distributed relatively evenly in its new dimension, it wouldn't be quite so overwhelming in abundance.
I foresee an objection:
"This will make it a lot harder to get redstone!" Not really, digging in the Nether is pretty safe, at least thus far. Ghasts don't spawn in small tunnels. And netherrack is so soft that you'll be able to create huge mines relatively quickly.
Coal makes sense for the Nether too. (In addition to its real-world placement, not instead of.) Or perhaps it should be charcoal instead! The remnants of long-destroyed zombie pigmen or something.
Not sure what else should be there. People have come up with all sorts of new ores for the Nether, but the fancy names they create strike me as out of step with the rest of the game.
Good idea, mining in nether is so boring and redstone is kind of out of place in the normal world.
Personally for the nether I'd also like to see sulfur deposits (that needs to be shoveled to acquire safely, otherwise ignites like TNT) and obsidian deposits (so you can actually get more obsidian in the nether).
Problem is redstone is needed for compasses and clocks, both of which are only useful in the normal world.

Still no infinite strongholds D:
Nah. Lapis is less rare then Redstone in the main mining layers; Its less time to mine then Redstone so I count it only fitting 1/3 of the description, which makes it not that bad.
The 2 I was referring to were hiding other ores and filling up your inventory 4x as fast.
Edit:

Brings up a good point.

i definately agree. you need a degree in computer technology or binary or something like that to understand the stuff. and you cant even make anything useful with it yet(pistons much).
redstone is a bland, boring, in the way mineral.

I have a video of Charlie Sheen while he was high. Is that what you mean by a charged creeper?

1) And it takes a metric ton of Redstone Dust to make anything remotely enjoyable. Moving it to the Nether would a) necessitate having to get diamond/obsidian before being able to make anything that's useful from it.
2) ...What? have you never heard of the extremely useful and common metal, copper, which even shares relative colouration with it? Hell, even graphite could be seen as Redstone, theoretically (though that's a bit more of a stretch). There are real-world equivalents.
3) So what if it is? Its primary usage is for travelling through the overworld very quickly. It's dangerous if you're unprepared, and it has materials you can't get in the overworld, such as Soul Sand and netherrack, the everburning stone. It's plenty unique enough. While it could use a bit more to spice it up as per the nether thread by Sabata and GreyAcumen, it doesn't need redstone moved there to make it interesting, as it definitely would NOT make it more interesting, just more annoying.

<Pluecherry777>: I still think its funny that in 5 months, a group of modders made a mod thats actually better than a game thats been around for 2 years...
Redstone is weird, because its more an advanced material that only some use a lot of, while others will only need a few dusts total to make a clock and compass.
But because it's at the same level as diamonds, anyone who mines for diamonds gets tons of redstone.
Maybe it could be rarer in the normal world than it currently is, but have the nether have it in great abundance.

Lapis lazuli fits 2/3 of that description, plus is less useful (although you can craft them into blocks to save space.) Does it annoy you too?

Imagine this:
You are mining at the nether and them BOOM 10 ghasts out of nowhere ambush you.
