Entirely unnecessary. Just reskin it to your favorite color and leave it. These threads trying to add customization by adding dye to everything are actually taking it away. Colored cakes would most likely be done the same way as sheep, particles, redstone, text, etc, where it's a white texture and the game just adds the color based on coding. This entirely prevents players from customizing the cake texture to look exactly how they want it to.

or, they could, I don't know, leave the white texture white, and modify the cake, leaving the white texture alone, or in a shape of their choosing. then, they could modify the colors in the color file themselves! ohhhhhhhhh, right, I forgot! guy who says NO! is always right! my bad!

[insert cynical, self-righteous statement starter here] leave the white texture white, and modify the cake, leaving the white texture alone, or in a shape of their choosing. then, they could modify the colors in the color file themselves! [insert pointless insult here]
The way Minecraft applies colors wouldn't allow for this. It applies a layer of color/tint over the entire texture. This would mean essentially, that if you tried to edit the files to give your cake pink frosting, the entire cake would be tinted pink. The same for any other color. Creating cakes with multiple colors and interesting patterns would be compromised.

Dyed wool is entirely unnecessary. Just reskin it to your favorite color and leave it.

I'm afraid you don't understand. There would be a new texture for every cake. This would make more room for originality, because texture packers could make the new cakes just a new color of the old ones, but could also make them look like other stuff, like pies.

If that sounded less whiny due to the wording and needless use of exclamation, I would take you more seriously. Now yes, having multiple textures would solve this problem, but it introduces other issues. First is that there's only so much space on the texture files, and this space may be better used for new objects instead of just multiple versions of the same one. Considering how strictly every mob follows the same sized texture file, and how the existing ones are only added to, I don't see the files being enlarged any time soon to accommodate things like this.
And then there's the matter of what this would all be used for. Paintings being the best example, whatever you choose for these multiple skins will not be seen by anyone else who uses a different texture pack. Is it really worth it to have a bunch of different textures that only serve for decoration when no one knows what your decorations look like anyway?

First off, notch should not be limited by the terrain.png file size. If he has to, he can just add a terrain2.png. I doubt it would be that hard. And second, your right! Paintings are a good example, because they are in the game. Sure, not every one will see the same thing, thats the beauty of texture packs! If it really matters that your work of art is viewed in a specific texture pack, just tell everyone to switch to that one for full enjoyment.
IDEA FOR PRACTICAL USE
Each color could give a special power!
i.e Blue cake allows you to breath underwater!
Red allows you to be FIREPROOF
etc.
NO. DO NOT WANT
Sorry, but there is no reason eating rose petals should let you walk through flame without harm. I think dye should stay as something that makes stuff pretty.

They are a good example as why it is not a good way to do it. And as you put it, "if it matters". Which is exactly what I was pointing out. Does it matter if your cakes are multiple colors? No one else can see it, and they're going to get eaten anyway.

In my opinion, cakes are better for display. They look too nice, and really are not practical to carry around. I'd rather have a wonderful bakery full of colorful cakes then just eat them. Each person can see the wonderful bakery in his own texture pack, and enjoy it just the same. They can see it too, and what does it matter that they see it a little differently?

Eh, good enough reasoning for me to not care all that much anymore. If you only want it for display, that's your own thing and all the cons have already been brought to light. As long as people aren't ignorant while they discuss, I've done my part.

Have I... defeated the the GREAT TRAVESTY?
Good fight, my friend. Fare well.

Bah, don't flatter yourself. Your argument came down to pure opinion, and how you play the game. So there's nothing to discuss as I'm only interested in preserving Minecraft's theme and turning down threads that don't contribute much to the game.

Honestly, I'd much rather see some more effort on notch's part put into combat systems and more items which further allow players to interact with their environment instead of being able to color everything. I'm for the idea, but I can't say I would be screaming it from the rooftops since there's so much more than should be done first.
his idea could fit in vanilla (pun intended) minecraft. ghostridercraft could not, in any conceivable way.

lapis = mineral, like salt.
squid = calamari
cactus = already consumable irl. seriously, buy some. it's good.
flower pieces = do you know how delicious some flowers are?

Yes.... AMAZING! Like leaves but softer and more colorful and flavorful. Drugs are bad... eat flowers! They do nothing. Exactly what the law wants!

Yes I am a ____________ Miner.
Yes I have no profile picture.
Yes that is a bad idea.
