This is a simple, fun suggestion for cakes. To add more uses for dye (and not purpose the over suggested stained glass), we can dye CAKES! Why? Because it will be a simple way to make dye more widely used and add more verity to the cake world.
Crafting:
This would make a blue cake. When placed, it looks like this:
This can be done with any dye! Even black, white, and grey!
Not sure if lapis is safe to eat... or crushed bones... or squid ink... or burnt cactus... ok, never mind. THIS IS MINECRAFT, NOT REAL LIFE.
Example of more cakes:
And what the new terrain.png would look like:
And finaly, the new items.png:
Pros:
[*:2ti86cbz]Add more use for dye
[*:2ti86cbz]Make more verity in food
[*:2ti86cbz]Fun for parties
[*:2ti86cbz]Fun for bakeries
[*:2ti86cbz]Allow for texture packs to reskin as other foods
Cons:
[*:2ti86cbz]Takes up lots of terrain.png and items.png space
As for the only con I have seen so far, I think that it wont matter how much anything takes up, because Notch can just add another file for more images and textures. He shouldn't limit himself just by image space.

I think the damage values on the cake are already being used for the info regarding how much has already been eaten.
15 more types of blocks using up 15 more ID values....
because notch chose an incredibly archaic way to code minecraft...

Hm. Not sure what to do about this. But I'm sure could figure something out.
Even though it would be a burden to the creators of minecraft, and making them have to work non stop just to produce your cake idea, I CAN see your point. Maybe the different types of frosting could give you more health or something. For example: Red frosting might give you one heart, but blue frosting might give you four hearts.

No, I'd like dyeing to stay purely an esthetic change, like it is with wool now.
Also, I may be just ignorant, but it doesn't seem like it would take that much time to make, seeing that it is the same as normal cake with a different texture.

they could use the same method they use for wool. I'm pretty sure that is a space saving mechanic somewhere.

White frosting bores me. RED FROSTING FTW.
Black cake looks terribly inedible :s
...modding section go?
It would have lots of use! Like um, for example, um.. like... um....
Ok. No PRACTICAL uses. But it would be great for esthetic value! Have a nether theemed party with red cake!
Not sure what you mean. This is not a mod, nor do I want this to be a mod. This is for the core game!

By balance, do you mean make it totally worthless?
