1) Photo-resistors (circuit elements that detect the presence of light and can change logic flow based on it). 1. How is this practical in any way? 2. What do you mean, 'change the logic flow'?
2) Water/lava gates to control the flow of liquids for use in traps and such. Pistons are most likely being implemented, which can serve that function.
3) Fence gates. Block creatures in the same way as a fence, but can be opened and closed. Fences as they exist are a pain to use because there's no simple method for the player to enter/exit a fenced off area without building a multi-block door/gate (with overhanging ledges to prevent spiders from climbing it). Notch has said that he liked the gates idea, but fences at the moment don't prevent spiders from climbing them, and gates most likely won't either.
4) Powered lights. (glowstone + glass maybe?), so you can turn the lighting of an area on and off. Again, pistons can serve that function by opening and closing ports with torches in them.
5) Lasers (glowstone + diamond?). Not as a weapon or for damaging creatures, but for display. In other words, power a laser and it projects a point of light on whatever surface it intersects at a distance. Could open up a whole realm of user-created displays. Could also be used in combination with photo-resistors to communicate a singnal over long distances without having to lay miles of redstone wire. Could also be used as "trip wires" in combination with photo-resistors. Could also be used to aid in contruction in marking the co-ordinates or boundaries of construction (like in building a large bridge and using a laser to mark its height at the other edge so the ends match up). Really, the possibilities for emergent gameplay are huge here. 1. This isn't really 'minecraft-y'. 2. It's slightly overpowered. 3. How would this be less buggy than wolves?
6) Concrete Buckets (gravel + water bucket?): Flows like lava or water, but solidifies into a solid block with time. Might be cool if a redstone signal applied to a liquid block of conrete placed in the world kept that block in its liquid state until the signal turned off (concrete traps + syncronizing flow for mass simultaneous construction). Might also be cool if you could apply a dye to the concrete bucket to simplify construction of large colored objects. Seems like this would make construction too easy. In theory, one stack of gravel could get you a 128X64 wall.

The simplest example is: If the sun comes up, your circuit receives power. This can be used to turn lights on at night, and off during the day, detect when a player places a torch somewhere in SMP (good for booby traps), or in combination with lasers, have a wide range of other uses.

I already stated this, and am not including it in my mod for this reason.

Notch has said that he liked the gates idea, but fences at the moment don't prevent spiders from climbing them, and gates most likely won't either.
That's both easy to fix (the spider problem), and gates are useful regardless for keeping livestock out of lit areas (like off your crops), etc.

Again, pistons can serve that function by opening and closing ports with torches in them.
Pistons serve this purpose, but only in a very indirect and annoying way. Having a simple light with an on/off switch is a much more practical solution. Check my vid above to see what I mean.

1. This isn't really 'minecraft-y'. 2. It's slightly overpowered. 3. How would this be less buggy than wolves?
I don't think it's any less "minecrafty" than redstone circuits to begin with. Attach a diamond to the end of a redstone torch and what happens? Call it something other than a laser if that helps, but what I'm talking about is a focused beam of light. I use the term "laser" simply because that's what a laser actually is, not the thing you see Han Solo firing.
I really don't see it being overpowered either. I'm not talking about a weapon here. I'm talking about a device that can detect when something crosses its path (when used with photo-resistors), and a device that projects light onto a distant surface for display purposes. That's it. Any "power" it has will have to come from creative use and what will likely be fairly complex circuitry.
Also, if you take into account that I'm using diamond in the crafting recipe, it's not like the player is going to have easy access to an endless supply of these.
As for the bugginess, I really have no idea what you're talking about. I am confident I can implement these *myself*, and fully debug them, in far less time than Majong is going to take to bring the wolves up to their full potential (not the crap that's currently in-game).

My current plan for the crafting recipe is nether mud + gravel. In other words, this is not going to be something the player is going to have easy-access to in the early game.
Yes, it certainly makes construction easier in the later game. That's the point, and I fail to see how that's any kind of problem. On the contrary, I see it as a way to further unleash the player's creativity as they move further into the game.
1) Congrats, FlowerChild, it looks amazing. :smile.gif: I'm sure someone can also quickly whip up a texture for later use.
Thanks man! I hope the simple video posted serves to demonstrate the things work consistently and in a wide variety of circuit configurations. I've tested them quite extensively and am confident that they are very solid. Won't know for certain until I release the mod and people start hammering on it of course, but I play around A LOT with redstone, so I think I tested them with most of the situations possible in the game.
One thing that isn't clear from the video, is I've setup the light-bulbs to accept an "indirect power source" (like the in-game doors). This means they can actually be powered from one block below, or above. I did this so that people could easily embed the blocks into walls, floors, and cielings without having to deal with overly complicated wiring to accomplish it.
And yeah, I fully realize these things need some real textures. I'm no artist, but can easily include something better looking at a later date :smile.gif:
It's interesting...the vast majority of these suggestions have already been done.
Just take a visit to the "Released Mods" forum and you will see most of them. Of course, Notch hates modders.
I'd very much appreciate links to the specific mods if you could provide them. I dug around last night in that forum, and the only ideas I saw done there (at least out of the ones I am modding right now) were powered torches, and a form of minecart booster (although different from what was proposed here).
Let me know man, as I'd prefer not reimplementing features that have already been done by others :wink.gif:
1. Light-inverting glass. Makes everything look like you used the negative effect in photoshop on it.
2. Black glass: The type where you can see out, but they can't see it.
3. Tabs for chests. Not a block, but some organization features would be nice. You could make the tabs and add on to a chest and then name them.
4. More furniture. Self-explanatory. We need this.
5. Bring weather back. And with more detail.
6. A block that looks like it has water flowing over it. I always loved stuff like that.
I've created a seperate thread specifically to cover the mod I'm putting together to try and get it a bit more exposure than having it burried in this topic:

And a "real poster" (whatever that means) wouldn't have resorted to a sentence full of caps. What's your point?
I created this topic because there are a number of people on the forums that are getting increasingly frustrated by notch focusing on more and more firvolous features (like wolves) when there are so many better (and easier to implement) ideas bouncing around, AND because my other thread about wolves being a bad idea to begin with, quickly spiraled into a neverending cycle of circular arguments and juvenile flames. I then created this one to provide a constructive direction to the debate.
The subject is entirely relevant, as is my new mod name.
Now, instead of trolling the thread, why don't you post some ideas? If they're good, I've even demonstrated here that I'm willing to code them.
Thanks for the links man! Fair enough on the others, but the "laser" I'm talking about is nowhere near this, nor is it for a "light show". I think you'd better reread my description of it :wink.gif:
No problem. I wasn't trying to discourage you, by the way. I love mods...I use them. As long as you use your own code and sprites (which it seems like you are) most people won't care if some of the functionality is duplicated.
Nice job on the booster. I'd like to see more detail on how it works and how it's built, etc.
1
Chairs: Basically step blocks with signs on the sides, but one block. Placed next to another, the arm on that side disappears to make it a 2 seat couch. Right clicking a chair makes you sit in it, still able to look around. If a mob hits you, you get up out of the chair.
[] [] []
2
Flood gates: Powered by redstone, they let liquids though
[] []
[] []
3
Fence gates: a fence, but a door at the same time. It works like a door, right clicking opens and closes it, but you can't jump over it despite it being 1 block tall. It could look like the bottom of a door, but with the wood texture, and in the center of the block instead of the edge. Fences placed next to this will "reach out" and connect with it's edge.
[] [] []
4
Stairs of more block types, and half tiles. Some people like having a smooth stone house and stairs to match, but they don't exist! Even dirt stairs can be crafted, and if possible could grow grass. If naturally generated, imagine the epic landscape then!
[] []
[]
[] [] []
[] [] []
5
Locked chests: crafted like a chest with an iron (diamond?) inside. Crafts a locked chest, which looks like a normal chest, but right clicking it does nothing. When crafting, it leaves a key in the center of the crafting squares. This key and ONLY THIS KEY can open the chest you just crafted. To open the chest, you must have the key that came with it. Lose the key, you can't get anything out of the chest. Chests take 5 minutes to break with any tool, or instant with TNT, but don't drop the items out of it when destroyed. It only takes as long as a normal chest and does drop the items if you break it using it's own key. Locked chests would allow for community banks, and prevent griefers from thieving. If someone was really set on thieving, they would have to kill you and steal your key first.
6
Finally, upside down stairs. These would allow for epic "rounded" castle doorways, good looking stairs to bedrock (with these on the ceiling and stairs on the floor). Imagine the possibilities!

[] []
As you can see, some of these aren't my ideas, just things I would love implemented.
On the subject of trip wires with lasers and photo-resistors, I think I know a way to make it work.
= Photoresistor
= Laser Beam
= Laser Emitter
If you make an inverse redstone circuit ( a circuit that is affected so that it works backwards. If the source is powered (i.e. the laser beam being shot) you would have the photoresistor be "off". If the laser stops emitting, the photoresistor becomes powered and could be hooked up to an alarm block (or even a redstone contraption that works as an alarm) that goes off as soon as the photoresistor stops being powered.)
If you or any mob/player walked in the laser, it would temporarily block it off and would cause the alarm to shoot off. An inverter is simple to make and could be used with just about anything. Personally, I spent last night spending time playing with inverted circuits to make a TNT trap that is activated if a block is destroyed. Instead of a block being destroyed, we would have the laser stop emitting. This would be a good way to either A.) Alert you to mobs on your land a la proximity alarm or B.) You could hook it up to make a very good sand trap that falls into a TNT in water trap. This is a great idea. Here's the diagram.
= The laser is not blocked and (using an inverter) the photoresistor is 'off'.
[] [] = The laser is not touching the photoresistor and the alarm goes off/sends the poor soul that stepped on it into a pit of TNT in water.
This could be used very well and would make a great replacement for Pressure Plates. If they also added 45 degree mirror blocks that look like a triangle, you could also (as stated by someone else) make a laser stream that goes for about 30 blocks or to the nearest photoresistor and you could make a long connection to something without miles of redstone dust all over the ground.
All in all, this would be great and would be an excellent addition to the next update.
I went into Minecraft and played around with idea of a version of a "Laser Trip Wire" like I was talking about. Instead of using laser emitters and whatnot, I just used...
-Some Redstone
-An Inverter (Personally made by me)
-3 Note Blocks tuned so that they make a loud noise when triggered
-A Wooden Pressure Plate
I arranged it so that when initially set up, the notes went off (once) and then if I stepped on the plate, the power went off for the note blocks and when I stepped off the pressure plate, the note blocks were activated and played their notes only once. It was a good prototype but I still wish that we had some Laser Emitters, Photoresistors, or Mirrors. If we can get that in the next update, I will be a very happy person. Here's a :Diamond:, OP.

...
Your floodgate recipe already creates a compass...
And your locked chest design would be hard to code as it requires seperating individual items and not just item type, plus the chests would end up like this:
We really do need block protection and/or proper locked chests. My suggestion was making them indestructable like bedrock, but only placeable by an op command. And as a lock you enter a 4-digit PIN: chests would be unlocked at first, or use a default "0000" pin, and you can change it every time after successfully unlocking the chest.
Oops, forgot about compass. My recipes are just to get an idea anyway.
And a locked chest would be hard to code, but not impossible. Maybe assign a value to the chest and key, and it only will open the chest if the values match? I'm sure it could be easier to code than wolves.
A pin would be nice, I was going to include that in my post but I forgot. But indestructible, no. Op only, no way, then normal players would have to ask for "ophax" to get one. I for one hate asking for materials from ops. Yes it's easy to destroy a chest, but the griefer gets nothing out of it other than satisfaction of ticking someone off. Griefers like to steal things to use to grief, so they would probably rather kill the owner and get the key.
I would still prefer a key to a pin, but either would be nice. Besides, pin numbers are a little bit off the minecraft theme.
Edit: Oh, and maybe some variants of the chest, like trap chest (there's a mod for it). Crafted like a chest but with a TNT in the middle, they explode when opened.

It was a good prototype but I still wish that we had some Laser Emitters, Photoresistors, or Mirrors. If we can get that in the next update, I will be a very happy person. Here's a :Diamond:, OP.
