Cool ideas =) I really hope Notch read this topic! =D
I'd like to see some more weapons in the game, so you have to choose between i.e. a slow but powerful battleaxe, a fast low damaging sword and a pike/lance/spear that damages mobs from afar, but takes longer than the axe to use again.
Maybe a crossbow that fires slowly, but shoots farther and much more straight than the bow (maybe where ammo is more difficult to make/come by, a would be made by one stick and iron (so you'll have to decide wether to be safer on travels, mine faster and better minerals, and use minecarts to travel safe).
I'd also really like to see some throwing weapons, like made by one stick and one or two stone (knife and axe), which would have really low damage, like 1/2-1 hearts, for a more satisfying ranged combat in the start, where you might not have the possibility to go looking for gravel to make some arrows.
Another thing that I'd like, but I realise most probably won't be implemented, is some kind of runes/charms that transform you to different creatures, like an eagle for flying, wolf/cougar for faster running, dolphin for faster swimming, and a mole for faster digging. But, as I really like a challenge, these items would need to be rarely placed in dungeon chests, and cannot be crafted, have durability, and would need some time to cast/decast. Besides you would not be able to fight when transformed, if you're not using a troll charm, of which makes your attacks much stronger.
This would make Minecraft a lot more like many other games, but would also contribute to a more interesting combat system =)
A way of putting redstone wires inside other blocks so conceal them, so you can have the walls of your house full of redstone without having to make your walls 3 blocks thick with an open space between the inner and the outer. It could be made by crafting redstone wire with the block of your choice, and would drop both items when destroyed.
After reading this, I'm sure you wonder why I even play minecraft, since I mainly focused on combat systems/items in this post, but I like to do things in Minecraft according to what mood I'm in, so I can easily spend 5 hours every day for a week just building what ever I feel like, and then fill up my inventory of food and weapons to go on a long long hunt =)
Again, there's a LOT of great ideas posted here, and I really really hope Notch reads all of these posts
Ps. Let me know if you think the layout of my post was messy or something (PM me for a quick fix).
I was playing Minecraft yesterday after reading about the wolves update and I was walking to a new area to find wolves. It was taking some time to get to where I was able to discover new chunks because the world I was in is pre-Beta and Is very Large (the world size is over 60 Mb)I haven't wanted to abandon it yet as I have a few large projects that I'm still working on. The world was created prior to the biomes update I had done plenty of exploring,
So I began thinking, why doesn't Minecraft have a run feature? The more I thought about it the more sense it made. I began thinking of a way to get a faster walk speed and I immediately thought of Hermes' Shoes, the Greek god, and the shoes that have the wings on them.
Here is what I have so far.
You make a pair of normal golden boots, put them into the crafting bench with 2 feathers on either side, and add 2 things of red dye from red flowers, to make the classic looking red high tops with wings.
Feel free to add, or counter this Idea, but it was an interesting thought about how to increase the walk speed. I will concede that these need to have disadvantages as wells so here are a few ideas about disadvantages.
How about one disadvantage to them is that they are "slippery", ie, if you are wearing them, then the 'crouch to not fall' doesn't work and when you stop moving you slide for a little bit before stopping. The way to have them have health may be that they have several uses and a limited 'sprint distance' of 20 blocks or 30 seconds and that the sprint function on them only has maybe 10 uses or maybe that they are very delicate, ie if you drop more than one block in height they take damage. that would allow them to be useful, while still making them expensive enough to not have 800 pairs of them in your home base. Again I'm just spit-balling ideas here.
I know minecarts are faster but they are useless to explore new areas, because you don't have any minetrack down, you cant explore faster with them.
1) Collectable/Placable monster spawners. Would take little work, would not affect gameplay balance, and would be fun. There's mods for this in SSP and SMP, but first-party support would be better.
Considering your usage of the term "block" is rather vague, I took it to mean "peaceable widgets," whatever size they may be.
1. Water grate. When powered, allows water to pass. When unpowered, water will not pass.
2. Minecart booser block. Minecarts traveling over the block increase velocity. Same for minecraft "brake" block. Since brakes are so similar, I won't even count it as a separate block.
3. Magnet block. When placed and powered, all items involving iron (ie an iron pick lying on the ground) are pulled towards the block, at a reduced rate the farther they are away. Works for placed minecarts as well, does not work for blocks, obviously.
4. Horizontal door, aka "trap door."
5. Block that detects the presence of a loaded minecart that also allows a piece of track to be placed on top.
6. Block that detects the presence of water. Would have good synergy will with 1).
1. Feed troth or feed bucket: Could lure animals to you or even be a help with domesticating them. (Another topic entirly)
2. Bigger boats, holding more people: If water mobs such as sharks and whales are introduced, it'll take more that a fishing pole to bring one of them in. I was thinking leather for sails, or maybe furnaces used for self-propulsion. This means there'd also have to be harpoons and such, but you get the idea.
3. Crossbow/Long bow: this would be a more advanced form of bow and arrow. I could have sights on it, and could have distance advantages.
4. Flaming arrows: I can see this becoming a very large pain in the butt, but come on, that would be pretty cool would it not?
5. Mud/swamp block: A block that you would slowly sink into. Could be utilized in traps.
I understand half of these weren't blocks, but I couldn't really think of anything else.
1) Minecart Booster/Brake
When powered will boost a minecart, when unpowered will slow a minecart. Crafted with redstone and a minecart trackpiece.
Nice modification to the booster idea. I've also been wondering if they should be directional or not (kinda like the redstone relays).
Anyways, I really like the idea of slowing carts down when unpowered, as this lends itself to creating useful stopping points at your minecart station, and then pushing a button when ready to send the carts on their merry way.

Yeah, sorry for the ambiguous use of the term. I tend to view "blocks" as any object that can be placed in the world, or exists there naturally. I know that other people's definitions may vary :smile.gif:
Dude, I do believe that's the coolest mod I have seen yet, and I wasn't even aware of it. Major thanks :smile.gif:
And yes, I'm all for including something like this in the main game. It basically makes the water-gate/trap-door idea obsolete and has a ton of other uses. I'm all for mods, but I hate modifying my world in such a way that I become dependant upon them to keep my world working with the main game.
Would love to see this as an official feature in Minecraft, and I'd definitely be singing Notch's praise if this had made it in instead of wolves :smile.gif:
I'm unsure if anyone else has posted this idea, but I'll say it anyway.
I'd love to see NPCs in Minecraft that can build and destroy. Perhaps creatures that can be friendly or evil and build small towns or huts with medical supplies, food, and other things you can buy. Thus leading the evil ones to build monuments to their demonic gods and attack the player and his crops, house, wolf, etc.
I think it'd add great depth to the game.
Oh, and of course there would be an on/off switch for this as well.
I'm sorry that I won't make a block suggestion. It's something that I already suggested and got overlooked by both Mojang and this community, and I think it's worth 100x more than wolves: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=168950
Why, oh why must I waste so much time sorting stuff into a container!? I'm eagerly awaiting for the mod API so I can have a shot at it myself.

I've decided to put my money where my mouth is and create a mod covering some of these ideas, hopefully to act as a proof of concept for the main game.
Right now, I'm intending to implement the following features into it:
-Light bulbs.
-Photo Resistors.
-Lasers, as I described them in the OP...not a weapon, and not for a "laser light show" as someone mentioned).
-BBQ grill block (thanks to GunboatDebator for this excellent idea...hope you don't mind if I use it). I think I've decided to do this as a "block" instead of a thing that attaches to blocks (like a grill) as it seems to make the most sense given that it can only be oriented upwards. No need to complicate things then by having it attach to existing blocks, just make it a block itself.
-Minecart Booster Block
-Concrete, with enhancement to original idea of keeping it in liquid form when a redstone current is applied.
I'll avoid the fence gates for now as I want to focus the mod on redstone devices. I also won't do the water/lava gate as I think the pistons someone else mentioned (and which are already a mod that might be integrated into the main game) do a far better job of this than the gate I suggested.
Anyways, check the mod forum and I'll put up a post once the first version is ready :wink.gif:
Good to hear! I actually intended grills to be a block from the start; I probably should have clarified that, heh!
I'm happy to contribute ideas, and I can spot-check code if need-be. I don't have enough structural knowledge of Minecraft's code to contribute at this time, but definitely I can help debug.
Someone elses idea but... Jelly blocks. Made from combining slime balls in groups of 4 or 9. They can be walked over normally, but walking into them will push you back. Also jumping on them will allow you to jump two blocks vertically.
Arrows could be rebounded off them. It would be interesting to see what builds people try to use them in.
I have the grills working and fully tested! They are just as fun to play with as I suspected!
As a little teaser, the crafting recipe involves netherrack, flint & steel, redstone, and a bucket of water :wink.gif:
I will move onto the light bulbs next, and figure once that's complete (or maybe 1 or 2 other features), I'll release the first version of the "Better Than Wolves" mod, with updates involving the other blocks to follow.
