There are SO many good suggestions in this forum!!! It's so much fun to read them and imagine, but kinda depressing never knowing if Notch and the boys are gonna include any of them. Or if they even READ these suggestions. Oh well, here's hoping that they do!
Weather Cycles:
I know weather has been brought up before and suggested. I would like to agree that it would add much to the mincraft enviroment.
Thunder Storms -
Under heavy cloud, certain mobs would spawn (such as spiders) even though it isn't night. And maybe even though preferences are set to Peaceful.
Lightning could strike you. (instant death, of course.) Lightning could also cause fire if it strikes a tree.
Wind gusts would push you around. Sort of like directional water pushes you. Only with wind it would be invisilbe and would vary in direction occasionally. The idea is to make being out in a thunderstorm generally difficult.
Rain Showers -
I've heard suggested that rain showers would create puddles! LOVE this idea. A brief shower would create a puddle in a block depression of two or three blocks in size and one block deep. The puddles dissappear once the shower subsides. Puddles would appear randomly.
Showers would damage some sandstone blocks (the longer the duration of the shower - the more sandstone is damaged), and prevent any digging into sand, or maybe dirt too!
Showers would also make tree harvesting VERY slow.
Showers could help boost tree growth.
Cold/Hot Temps
I've also gotten into the idea of seasons. But an easier alternative would be temperatures.
Hot Days - with limited cloud cover your character would take on damage if out doors and running or working for a long period of time. You would have to eat, drink, or rest in shade to recover.
Cold Days - With periodic snowing, your character can't be outside for long without cow-hide armor covering him. Damage will start to occur if outside running or working for a long period of time. Rest next to a fire or lava, maybe soup, would revive you.
One last weather idea: HAIL! Would love an occasional hail storm tearing everything that isn't stone up!
To change the subject:
My only other suggestion is BOOKS! I've seen a couple of threads about books and frankly I'm really suprised that this hasn't caught on with Notch!
The cool thing about books is that it's just another way the user can influence his enviroment. Minecraft rocks because the game doen't dictate what you are and what you're doing or should do. Books work with that mentality, allowing the user to decide. Just think of the stories that people would include with their worlds! They could potentially be EPIC! I would love downloading someone else's world with a mystery to solve or a detailed description of the things in it!! How cool would that be?
And it wouldn't have to be difficult to include.
A book would have ten or so pages with each page given ten lines to write on. Need more? Craft another book.
Book shelves would act just as Chests act except they would only carry books.
This would greatly increase the value of farming the items to craft books and paper.
I feel good sharing these. They've all been suggested before, I know. But thanks for the opportunity to share!

Lightning strike = instant death, why? People have survived lightning before.
This is true. Perhaps a lightning strike should have the potential for instant death. Or if you already have substantial damage then a strike would finish you off.
What if iron armor increased your chances of being struck? HA! Irony, indeed!

Notch wants to add weather into the game. It's just not easy and doesn't take priority. You used to be able to toggle the "Beta Rain" using a function key not sure if you can anymore though.
Lots of weather has been suggested as well.

I didn't realize Notch ever talked about weather! I remember the rain toggle and my first minecraft world ever had snow falling. I figured that making weather work within different biomes is REAL tricky.
Do we know if Notch every cruises through these suggestions that we make? It would be rather pointless to have a suggestion forum that only users read and not the creator!

To my knowledge, suggestions only get Notch's attention on GetSatisfaction, if even there. This forum tends to be a preliminary before posts are made there.

It's been on his blog once or twice if I remember correctly.
Ygdrasel is also correct, Notch looks at GS far more than the forums. There's just too much crap on the forums to weed through.

Stories: A Miner's Chronicle, The Lost Chronicle [Entries 32-2, 33-1, and 33-2 out!]
I don't think I'll like all my hard work being torn up by a hail storm.

That isn't irony. :sleep.gif:
It should do a set level of damage.
