Compasses currently can be used to locate the world spawn point or can be paired with lodestone.
Compasses could also be paired with a second compass - each compass would point towards the direction of its pair.
There are a few scenarios I can think of where this would be helpful:
1.) A player leaves one compass in a chest near their respawn point and can use the the second compass to return if they get lost after exploring.
2.) If the player dies, they might not know where they are or how to get back to that location. They could use the second compass to locate its pair and recover the items they dropped upon death.
3.) When exploring with a partner, a player could use the paired compass to locate their friend if they get separated.
Pairing could be performed solo or between players. A solo player would hold one compass in their main hand and the second compass in their off-hand. The player would then hold left-click
for a few seconds to pair the two compasses. While pairing, the compass needle could rotate a few times to indicate pairing, and firmly point at the player when the process is complete. If two players want to pair their compasses and they are within a few blocks apart, they could similarly hold out their compasses for a few seconds to pair them. While pairing, a redstone dust trail could connect the two compasses flashing between a weak signal and a strong one. When the compasses are paired, the redstone dust trail would show a solid strong signal. While paired, the compasses would have the same enchanted appearance they have when paired with lodestone.
To unpair a compass, the player could hold the compass in their main hand and redstone dust in their off-hand and then "pair" the compass with the redstone dust. The unpaired compass would then point to the world spawn point like it originally did.
If the compass' pair is not in the same realm or the player carrying the pair isn't logged into the game, the compass' needle could spin and point at random directions like the compass currently does when used in the Nether or the End.
Paired compasses could be a good compliment to pairing with lodestone. Lodestone can be placed in structures at permanent locations and any number of players can pair with it, but because ancient debris is required to craft it, it can be difficult to craft early in-game. In comparison, paired compasses are relatively easy to craft and can be accessible early in-game, but because they are limited to pairs, they would be difficult to use in groups and other options are better for more permanent locations (like maps or even the coordinates from the debug menu).
I think this could work well when used with other players- but if you can put a paired compass in a chest, it renders the lodestone obsolete. Interesting idea, but I think this would have to be primarily for multiplayer situations.
