New underwater caves are awesome, just a problem: suffocation
I personally think that 15 seconds are really not much, I love the new immersed cave but I cannot explore them, even with respiration it feels too little, a human can resist at least 30-60 seconds, it's actually a lot and represent the time of respiration 1 (30 seconds) and 3 (60 seconds)
I personally think that 60 seconds by default and 240 with respiration 3 (actually 240 is the dolphin time so it feels right) would be perfect and let players actually appreciate the undersea and the new caves, most players ignore that part of the game (I hate the stress of having that little time and risk to die just to explore a relict, I'm not the only one).
you would recuperate the air 4 times slower, It feels like a good trade and a little bit more realistic (even if it's not the point)
Let's face it, nobody like drowning so fast so I just ask this:
please Mojang can you change the time from 15 seconds to 60 for just one snapshot to see if people like this change?
I would love to explore the new underwater caves in the survival mode even if it's just for a snapshot, the time is so little every time...
True the time the player can hold his breath underwater is way less than real life i hoped that mojang would have increased the time we can stay underwater by a few seconds more back in 1.13 but instead they gave us a turtle helmet that just gives 10 seconds of water breathing making it around 70 seconds if you have respiration 3 on the turtle helmet. Atleast the water breathing potion will become more usefull now since atm you only need ot when you want to explore the ocean monument in order to get prismarine for the conduit.
Killing turtles is ******** in the first place and actually should not be in the game if you know the game design rules of Mojang, so more armour pieces is not something we'll see probably ever
I don't like that idea either turtles should not be killed in the first place or maybe if they would be a food source maybe just in desperate situations, I love turtles (I have two pet turtles myself)
What I want is just something that changes the game so that everybody can explore underwater, even respiration and potions to a player like me (not good enough underwater) really feel too weak, I mean:
Underwater you are normally slower (and I actually appreciate that) but yet you don't have much time to do anything so for me even with a full enchanted Netherite set every task it's so tedious because it's done under too much pressure, I don't even feel like exploring an ocean temple or even create structures underwater unless maybe stacking on potions
I personally hate it and I would love to have some more freedom underwater...

Bats are endangered too but drop nothing at all. Even though they can steal your attacks meant for other mobs.
(like creepers )
They shouldn't be killable for a good reason. I hate minecrafts bats.
Turtle shells by the way aren't dropped by killing turtles. You have to breed them and afk a crazy long time near the eggs to hatch them. Once the baby turtles mature, they dropp the shells,
so where is the problem with having more turtle armor?

wow that's cool, I thought it was a drop lmao
Polar bears and pandas don't drop anything too, those animals are in the game for immersion and esthetics, I actually really like bats hopefully we see more of them in big caves and less in small ones so they don't get killed to defend creepers and zombies
Respiration is linked to helmets, a turtle armour could be good to float or mine slightly faster underwater, I actually like the idea it's a rare material after all
My idea is to give all player the possibility to explore underwater because the grand majority of people does not even try, it's too dangerous or difficult to gather resources, Everybody prefers an armour with defence enchantment or unbraking than respiration or aqua affinity and I talk for experience, I tried the enchantments and it's good but it doesn't feel like I can chill underwater and take my time to mine or fight without the stress of suffocation I always run out of time and begin to suffocate (I actually don't like the suffocation damage reduction, what's the point of that? are you supposed to suffocate every time?)

Polar bears drop raw cod and salmon. Don't know anything about the panda drops.
(Btw i'm marking things red to signal what i want to respond to,
i dont think bad about things wich i mark red (unless there are things wich i mark green too(that's just me doing me xD)))
About the under water difficulty: It took me about 3 days to finally figure out how to swim in minecraft.
I know, that might sound ridiculous but um...
xD
When it comes to restoreing air alone, it is quite easy to just place a door or something under water.
Aside from learning how to swim/dive there are only 2 difficulty factors i can think of:
Drowneds with tridents & the ocean monuments.
When you have a difficult time building a guardian farm:
Unequip every piece of armor (armor not tools) and drink potion of invisibility + water-breating.
You don't need to get a cow all over the continents, just place tnt on the outer walls,
cover it with dirt and redstoneblock to trigger it.
Then you can kill those elders easy using tridents. (You should wear armor for that step)
I just build my very first guardian exp farm about 2 weeks ago on a german server.
Even tough i was always scared about the building procedure and the mobs themself.
Untill then, that was the only farm i never build.
Soo... Let's be honest:
I'm not the kind of player who enjoys the under water content of minecraft that much.
It's not that i dislike the oceans, it just doesn't feel rewarding to explore them,
unless you are interested into building with their contents or if you like diving.
Sponges work weird and it's a drag to get them from ocean monuments.
If you want to remove a large amount of water, a flying machine is what i would go for.
Corals and iceblocks can only be mined with silktouch, wich i find disappointing.
Unless i've visited the nether to get breath potions, i only dive for easy shipwracks.
In this situation i am after bamboo.
But there are things i do like: sea pickles.
Before 1.16 this item had the lowest light level of all the items and i like building dark places!
(To bad you can only grow them on coral blocks)
So.. these where my thoughts about minecrafts under water stuff.
Conclusion:
-Breath is to short, even with turtle-helmet + respiration3
-The ocean monument lacks treasure
-Corals & Ice require silktouch to mine
-The turtle-helmet lost it's worth to netherite helmet
Imo Mojang should add new content to the oceans or improve the monument / breathing.

My projects:
-are abandoned for now. I might pick 'em up in the future.
For now i'm working on a private modpack that suit's my own playstyle.
I am gonna stay in modded 1.12.2 untill my potato dies. No mercy! :Q
The thread title itself is almost a good example of good game design. "Exploration vs Death", or "Exploration vs Risk".
Exploration is good, but it becomes very monotonous without any risk involved. You want to explore that underwater cave where your chances of drowning without Respiration are pretty high? It's what makes playing exciting. The risk involved in exploration.
However, you do make a good point about how a real person can hold their breath for a bit longer than Minecraft's standard 16 seconds. The average person can hold their breath for about 30 seconds. Game balance would be changed slightly if underwater time was increased to 30 seconds, but I feel like it would be a welcome change.
I think that suffocating is not that mortal alone but is more the stress of it, a normal person can hold their breath 30 seconds but in actuality is more of the psychology of it, in actual scenarios (saving someone or retrieve something) somebody swimming can resist much longer
30 seconds are fine tho, I would personally prefer drowning doing much more damage with fewer ticks (fewer ticks just means that instead of 1 damage in .5 second it's like 2 in 1 second, 3 in 1.5 seconds etc.), we actually drown in few seconds and I would like to see it in the game, to see 0 bubbles should be feared, like having an empty food bar and starving (starving being slow actually make sense because finding food is not as immediate as fining air)
the value I would personally test if I could being 30 seconds, recover at half the speed and double drowning damage (maybe at a slower paste, so the screen jiggle less) with the screen turning black as the damage stacks up
then I would see if it's good to double down again: 60 second, slower recovery and more damage
sometimes I see an update that adds something I dreamed of for years and I don't understand why it wasn't already in the game, like for the raw ore (sure now the game actually need this It's not for flavour and things like that, I get it), but I fear that a change like this will take some time to be actually noticed and considered by the developers...

Instead i would like to have more turtle armor to further increase the limit.
Let's say each peace of gear gives you additional 10 seconds, just like the helmet.
You would then end up with 55 seconds + Respiration for the helmet.
Before Netherite i was willing to breed turtles for the turtle helmet.
But the difference in protection between a netherite helmet and a turtle helmet is quite big imo.
I don't waste time breeding turtles anymore, the breathing potion is just a better combination with a full netherite set.
What do you hink about this, do you still use the turtle helmet?
