Endermen are, at least in my opinion, easily one of the most terrifying things you can come across- partly because I'm not all that good at fighting them. The idea of something that can not only remove blocks, but can teleport around to annihilate you is decidedly frightening. And, of course, endermen are essential to get the materials with which to activate the portal.
...But Endermen aren't really threatening- there are some decent strategies to avoid them, such as leaping into water, getting your back up against a wall, etc. But one of the most common strategies seems to consist of getting yourself in a two block high, moderately deep cubby hole, and then attacking without any danger. This seems questionable at best, and, in my opinion, really circumgates the whole sense of ominous danger when dealing with endermen.
The best way I can see to do this would be to allow Endermen to destroy certain types of blocks when provoked, in order to get to a player. Endermen can pick up blocks- but primarily only naturally occurring ones. Endermen farms, of course, could still be built using whatever blocks Endermen couldn't break- such as obsidian.
Is this totally overpowered, or does it sort of make sense?

Endermen don't need buff they are already one of the strongest (non-boss) mobs to fight. Adding a feature in which they could delete blocks in order to get to the player would be overpowered as you need to have really good armor in order to fight them properly
This is an absurd idea, having mobs that could just come in and destroy your blocks to get to you in a house would ruin people's builds they put a lot of work into. It's bad enough that Zombies can smash down wooden doors on hard and Creepers can destroy anything except bedrock or obsidian.
having Endermen delete blocks to get to players who are in houses would be annoying, and as Chokolada said overpowered as it would defeat the point of building a house in the first place.
This is one of those ideas which should be a mod only thing or be in a separate newer game mode.

I would suggest instead having Endermen teleport away if they cannot reach players that are underneath 2 block high structures, this would eliminate the cheesing, and also do away with the need for Endermen to grief player builds.

Not everyone plays survival for griefing.
