The Caves, Underwater, and now even the Netherworld all have ambient noises- in addition, there are ambient noise files, (Never used), coded into the game. (Sound files for waterfalls, chimes, etc.) And yet, the Overworld is still eerily quiet- to the point where It feels odd, (At least to me), to play the game without some mod to add ambient sound of some sort.
The sound files likely weren't implemented at the time due to coding problems, (This is what I've read, but I'm not entirely sure as to its credibility), but this is no longer the case. The Overworld ought to have different background noise depending on the time of day, weather and biome- as well as biome specific noises. For example:
-Unique Ambient noise for different biomes, including forests, jungles, plains, savannahs, conifer forests, deserts, coastlines, and cold biomes.
-Unique noises that play at random in each biome such as the noises in the nether, caves, and underwater. These could include bird calls for forests, ice noises for cold areas, weird jungle noises, etc.
-Unique wind ambience for caves and high altitudes- wind noises for high altitudes, and creepy chimes/wind for caves, in addition to existing cave noises.
-Unique ambience for rain? Maybe specific weird sounds heard only during rainy weather?
If you, like me, don't like a silent Overworld, you can check out mods such as Dynamic Surroundings and AmbientSounds 3 on Curseforge. Have your own ideas for ambient noise? Please comment and offer feedback!
I suggested to add birds mobs to overworld. Thay will act like bats, just fly and produce sounds. Different birds produce different sounds. So, overworld is not silent anymore, and those sounds are ont fake, but produced by actual mobs.

i like ambient mods, but i dislike dynamic surrounding (the mod).
It brings along so many animal sounds that arent in the game and i dont have the patience to deactivate them.
Why add elephant sounds in savanna, that scares the heck out of you and then you realize "there isnt a single savanna theme mob" -.-
I absolutly enjoy the reverb hall in caves and dynamic surroundings does this the best.
I'd love to have better ambient sounds in mc.
My projects:
-are abandoned for now. I might pick 'em up in the future.
For now i'm working on a private modpack that suit's my own playstyle.
I am gonna stay in modded 1.12.2 untill my potato dies. No mercy! :Q
Yes! And echo/reverb when sounds are heard in caves/large interiors.
