For the record, this is just my theory- (Actually, that's not entirely true either- many people seem to have come to this conclusion) -and feel free to correct me if I'm grasping at straws here. I think it's reasonable to assume that the Ender World will be the next part of the game to be updated, namely for one reason:
Simply put, the past three updates and upcoming update, (Caves/Cliffs, Nether, Villages, Aquatic, and now the Wild Update), have all been more or less about revamping an outdated area of the game, rather than adding too much controversial new content. I think this is a smart move on Mojang's part: it ensures that the game isn't so radically different that older players feel left out, while adding enough new content to keep the game fresh. Furthermore, it's something of a cascade effect- you can't just update one part of the game, because it will leave other areas feeling left behind- it's kind of an all or nothing deal.
It's for this reason that I think the End is next in line for a facelift- the End is, appropriately enough, the last part of the game that hasn't really received any significant changes in... quite some time. If Mojang does wish to continue enhancing various parts of gameplay, then the End is most definitely next.
The main things we have to base any ideas off of are similar updates, primarily the Nether Update, as well as the established properties and aesthetic of the End. As such, I for one think an End Update can be narrowed down to the following things:
- The Enderworld needs to keep its Vibe as a barren, hostile, almost transcendent wasteland beyond the normal realms of the game. This doesn't mean it should be uninteresting, persay; it's more of an aesthetic thing. The End shouldn't be too full of stuff all of the sudden- it would feel too drastically different.
- Like in the Nether Update, new biomes could be added, each with unique mechanics. New biomes should not just be aesthetic- they should have various uses and purposes as their own. (In addition to looking nice and fitting for the End.) Also like the Nether Update, the existing biome could remain in place unchanged- or at least minimally updated. Also keep in mind that the End is fundamental different from the Overworld and Netherworld- the Netherworld is entirely Underground, whereas the Ender World is entirely... sort of floating in a cosmic void. This is a pretty significant factor, both for terrain generation and game mechanics in general.
- A new update could necessitate new mobs, not necessarily biome specific, (In fact, I think the Hoglins were the single biome specific mob introduced in the Nether Update), but with interesting new mechanics. Once again, mobs shouldn't exist for purely aesthetic reasons. (Ahem, rabbits.) They need to have purpose, and need to suite their environment.
- In keeping with the existing mechanics of the End, the End needs to be... yes, End-Game. Any new content should be suitable for players experienced enough to make it to the End.
- Finally, an End Update would necessitate new blocks to make up these new biomes and possible new structures- as well as using existing materials in new ways.
In this post, I want to detail a theoretical End Update, primarily to suggest my own ideas on the matter. I think such an update is not only likely but practically guaranteed in the near future. What follows is a compilation of ideas regarding how an End Update might be implemented, fitting with the above categories. These are just my ideas, and more of an example for how such a thing could take place, rather than anything set in stone. (I feel like this goes without saying, but I'm going to say it anyways.)
The End Update would introduce, among other things; several new biomes, a couple of new creatures to inhabit these biomes, and a general makeover to this late-game dimension, in order to provide a sort of final frontier- a hostile, ultimate destination for the most determined of colonists and adventurers; while still keeping with the existing themes of the End- a Barren, hostile alien world transcendent of the other realms of the game. Are any of these ideas exceptionally good or awful? Feedback is appreciated!
Updated Strongholds ~ Strongholds have been given some additional polish to better match the existing structures. (And are possibly guarded by wardens?) Strongholds may now include components more along the lines of a traditional dungeon exploration experience. In order to discourage players from simply drilling through, Silverfish infestations are common in the vicinity of Strongholds. In addition, expect traps, dead ends, and mysterious hints as to the nature of the people who built these places...
Updated Biome: End Wastes ~ End Wastes- as in, large islands with nothing much on them- no longer consist of just chunks of end stone and absolutely nothing else. End Rind, is an even sturdier version of End Stone that can be made by smelting end stone, and occurs in large veins that can be seen protruding from islands- it's slightly darker yellowish than normal end stone, breaking up unaesthetic, featureless chunks of rock. However, for the most part, these wastelands are still big, barren, and empty. Shattered Stone is a new type of sediment that consists of broken fragments of End stone, and can be crafted from End Stone. This shattered stone occurs in large patches and dunes that make up the upper layers of wasteland isles. Walking on it with bare feet deals a small amount of damage, and it also damages boots gradually- making it an insidious threat for travelers. It makes a decent defense, as it damages most mobs, and deals significant damage when dropped on things.
Updated Biome: Chorus Forests/Chorus Highlands ~ Chorus Forests are also only slightly different than before. In addition to featuring Chorus plants, patches of Chorus Lichen can be found here- the remains of rotted Chorus plants. This purple lichen can be placed on any side of a block, and can be found scattered amidst Chorus Plants and growing on the sides of Chorus Isles- along with occasional piles of Rotten Chorus, which can be smelted directly into Purper. It also serves a practical purpose- touching Chorus Lichen causes you to immediately stick to it. If you jump on Chorus Lichen, you have to continue jumping to get out of it. If you touch Chorus Lichen on the side of a block, you stick to it until you jump off- allowing for some new parkour options. Chorus Vines are a new type of flora found dangling from Chorus islands, and can also be crafted from Lichen- They act sort of like scaffolding in reverse. You can climb quickly up and down them, and can place them from the top down. Finally, the Chorus Highlands are a new variation on the Chorus Forest that consists of more treacherous, mountainous terrain- namely, more cylindrical plateaus at varying altitudes, with sheer cliffs.
New Biome: Skulk Overgrowth/Skulk Spires ~ The Skulk Overgrowth is a new biome that consists of incredibly dense, (And hostile) flora. Large vines would riddle these islands, along with a variety of strange growths of the more sinister sort. Large black mushroom trees would consist of two new blocks- Skulk Fungus, and Skulk Stalks- a new wood type that can be used to craft various wooden items, such as crafting tables- which previously couldn't be obtained in the End. A blue version of the Shroomlight would provide scant illumination in these dark and dangerous alien jungles- In addition to the skulk growth already featured in the Deep Dark, new flora here would have unusual effects- such as poisoning entities that walk through them. (A particularly deadly combo could be a plant that makes a poisonous cloud when something gets too near, and another type of plant that drastically slows movement.) Various vines and stalks would make visibility low. Finally, mind your step- In addition to the occasional Endermen, dangerous (and equally skulk themed) predators would roam these hostile overgrowths.
New Biome: End Ruins ~ The remnants of a long lost and very much alien civilization, these large ruins would be an extension of the 'Cities' already present in the End. Built of Purpur, End Stone bricks, end rods; etc; whomever built these places were clearly advanced... or perhaps simply insane. These 'islands' would consist of vast conglomerations of random, partly ruined structures, interconnected by bridges- though most would be broken. The random and confusing nature of these islands would make implementing the generation system fairly easy- any glitches or weird generation would be a feature. While it's clear these vast alien ruins have crumbled long ago, there's still a fair bit of rare loot, end rods, shulker boxes... and perhaps other remnants of these long lost builders. Beware though- hostile Purper Golems guard this place. Faster and smarter than the Iron Golems, these deadly automatons possess a devastating laser attack.
New Structure: Elytron Nest ~ While more common and somewhat smaller than End Ruins, these Nests only generate far from said ruins. Consisting of large, roughly orb shaped structures interconnected by haphazard strands and bridges of organic material, these nests are home to the Elytron- hives of hostile, alien arthropods. The Nests themselves consist mostly of Chorus Rot and End Stone, with rough, armored plates of End Rind on the surface- almost like weird asteroid belts. More like Piglin bastions than an actual biome, the large orbs are riddled with tunnels. Breaking things within the Nests is liable to release more hostiles from infested blocks, forcing players to make their way through these confusing catacombs in search of a rare new resource- Elytra Shards, Which can be used to make Elytra, as well as a unique armor set.
New Structure: End Shipwreck ~ Ruined versions of End Ships that generate rarely in any part of the End.
New Material/Creatures: Elytra Shards & Elytron ~ The Elytron are insectoids- arthropods that build dangerous Nests filled with unpleasant, alien beetle creatures. When killed, they have a small chance of dropping Elytron shards- enough shards can be used to craft Elytron Plates, which can be used to make unique Equipment and, most importantly, allow you to craft Elytra. Elytron Equipment would have unlimited enchanting potential, but would have less base durability and protection than Netherite.
The Elytron themselves are quite clever, and difficult to kill. They act as a hive mind, trying to block players paths through their nests, and fight in groups. One variant is capable of flight, and attacks anything that comes to near to the nest. Another type latches onto the player, holding them down while others can attack... and so on and so forth. They're intended to provide a signifigant challenge for experienced players. There ought to be a decent reward in the core of the Nest...
New Enchantments: Powerful enchantments unique to the End:
End Veil ~ Enchant a helmet; allows you to look at Endermen without provoking them, and allows you to see Enderite materials.
Void Heart ~ Item returns to your inventory if dropped into the void, and stays in your inventory if you fall into the void.
End Vision ~ Enchant a helmet; provides the glowing effect from the spectral arrow to all nearby entities.
Lord of Arthropods ~ The opposite of Bane of Arthropods, Attacking something with Lord of Arthropods causes any nearby Silverfish, Spiders, Endermite, and weaker Elytron to attack it as allies. Wearing enough of these will prevent Elytron from attacking you unless provoked. (Though, you'll obviously still have to attack them to get their shards.)
Soul Bind/Divine Binding (Edit) ~ Allyourbasesaregone brings up a pretty good idea for an enchantment unique to the end- a rare, high level enchantment that can be applied to any object, and causes it to remain in your inventory even after death. (Handy, in a place where falling into a bottomless void is always a possibility.)
New Material: Enderite ~ I was trying to think of something that would make mining in the End worthwhile- or at least some sort of material that would be unique, and make sense to find in a ruined ancient city. ...This is what I came up with.
Enderite ore is moderately common in the End, and looks a sort of metallic dark turquoise. It can also be found in cities... though finding it is a bit difficult for reasons that will quickly become obvious. Enderite is themed after the staring mechanics of Endermen- that is it's invisible! You can only see Enderite when you're touching it, along with any blocks directly adjacent; or when something impacts the Enderite. Otherwise, it looks translucent. In this manner, players can create bases that are hidden... simply because they can't be seen unless you have the proper equipment! While various bricks and stone types of Enderite could be made... as well as perhaps an Enderite chest, these would be invisible from a distance. Another idea is an Enderite Detector, which releases a redstone signal of increasing power the longer it's looked at.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These are just some ideas, and by no means a complete concept. (Also, Edit: No End Update in 1.19. Though, looking back, I do think I'd rather have the Overworld updated before the End. Pleasant surprise, I guess?)
I certainly think an End Update is possible- even likely. Probably not anything like my speculation, but it is just that- speculation. I mean, Mojang certainly blew me away with the Nether Update. I think that establishes a reasonable precedent for something of an overhaul.
You're probably right as the End is very barren. I like that it's a wasteland and I think that it should remain as such, but it would be an improvement to add ruins or minerals to mine for just something to make it worth trekking.
As long as the End doesn't end up with cheap death causing mechanics I don't care what gets added
imagine being pushed off a 1 block wide bridge that you painstakingly built to get to the outer islands
It's possible Endermen can do this but only if you look at them triggering the aggro effect, and you can't hit them just by placing blocks down, and the player has the full choice to ignore them or wait for them to teleport away, which means the blame is on the player, not the game.
Adding a different hostile mob that could just randomly spawn on the bridge and knock you off without any input like I just mentioned above, that would ruin the End dimension completely, because not all outer islands are within reach of an Ender pearl to make the jump by an alternative method, also using ender pearls risks you falling off the side and dying, potentially causing you to lose a ton of important gear.
I do agree with your above statement though. End should for the most part remain as it is now, it is supposed to be a void with floating islands, almost devoid of any life, its only native inhabitants being Ender Dragon, Endermen and Shulkers.
I think Mojang have this dimension nailed pretty well.
The only change I would agree with to this dimension going forward, is maybe add more islands in the negative Y coordinate after the Caves and Cliffs update, that can only be safely accessed with potion of slow falling, man made water fall with a water bucket, Elytra or ender Pearl.
These islands could have teleporters that send you back to the original island where Ender Dragon was spawned or defeated on.
But these could also have some extra interesting rare loot exclusive to these lower islands only, such as enchantments that cause tools or armour to spawn in the players ender chest if they accidentally fall into the void and die, but only if there are empty slots left in them.
The enchantment could be named, Divine Binding.
Meaning the tool or armour piece is magically bound to the soul of the player who respawned
and they can retrieve it from their ender chest if the requirements are met.
Niche, but I like it. And your points are reasonable.
What I would like to see and I'm sure there's lots out there who want this too, is another dimension to be added to the game with far more mobs and bosses to battle, something similar to Twilight Forest would be a good start imo. The current dimension system is outdated, there should be more than just the End, Nether and Overworld in my honest opinion, and currently the only way to solve this is with mods which isn't good enough.
I've argued the End for the most part is fine the way it is, although some may disagree and is their opinion which they have a right to.
But I would like to see Minecraft get a dimension overhaul in a way that adds more to go to.
You never tried this mod on Java version before? it's great, it's one of my personal favourites. You get to fight wizards in castles, which admittedly I haven't fought legit in survival. But you also get a slew of other mobs that make the realm feel and look like an enchanted dimension. The wizard isn't the only boss in the game but it is a tough one from what I read online.
You also get upgrades to weapons which may be more powerful than even the netherite gear now in vanilla.
You get labyrinths, glaciers with penguins on them and birds that inhabit the forests.
Did I mention that fireflies exist in this mod too? I've talked about this mod on this forum several times before in other threads.
I know Mojang have been slowly adding new creatures to the official game, but there are still far more animal candidates that could be brought to the game and Twilight Forest does hold some of them. Ravens would be cool too, as another type of bird.
Who knows, perhaps the End could have some role in adding new creatures to the game too.
Like End having spawn eggs that you could take with you into the Overworld to spawn and breed certain new animals,
in a similar way to bringing animals through the Twlight Forest portal to add them to the Overworld, presumably for breeding.
Honestly I love the idea of an end update and all these ideas seem pretty good.
Admittedly, on the topic of strongholds... I think mojang needs to rework how structures generate, like, they need to take cues from roguelikes in order to make combat and area encounters more interesting. Its a pretty nebulous concept for sure, and the only way to flesh it out is to experiment with a mod or something, but heck, I'm tempted to give it a shot...
This is really awesome, I love this. Have you put this on the minecraft feedback website? Tons of people would vote for it. It could really get into the game.
Maybe the chorus lichen could have some sort of teleporting property like most things in the end - like if you walk on it it teleports you randomly...?
Thanks for the feedback! I wanted to respond to some of the things mentioned thusfar:
-I personally don't think there needs to be any more dimensions added to the game, but this is largely just a preference. Mojang has stated before that they intend to stick with three, and it sort of makes sense- each of the existing three dimensions fills a specific gameplay niche. Firstly in terrain, with the Netherworld being entirely underground, and the End being entirely in the sky; but also in terms of progression. Again, just my preference, but I prefer a couple high quality dimensions to lots of simpler ones. (Again, mod developers have made some pretty fantastic dimensions that Mojang wouldn't develop for various reasons.) It's for this reason that I'd rather see the End upgraded than a new dimension added.
-The End shouldn't be annoying or needlessly death inducing; but it also, obviously, ought to be pretty darn hostile, treacherous, etc. Keeping the barren vibe of the existing End, while adding new features to enhance the existing vibe. (Hence the End Ruins/Elytron Nests, which would act as incredibly challenging late game experience. (And would, obviously, be pretty rare. Elytron nests would have a frequency similar to bastions, whereas the End Ruins, while much larger, would be very rare, and filled with dangerous enemies and rare, high-tech materials.
-Strongholds do need work, especially given the recent Caves and Cliffs Update. I really like Yung's new stronghold mod- it's a little over the top, but it gets the idea right, and it's a lot more atmospheric, if not the most challenging.
-I'm not especially into the Minecraft Feedback website, and mostly just enjoy discussing ideas and whatnot, but if anyone else wanted to put it on there, I'd hardly object.
-...And, on a side note, it also occurred to me that the addition of Amethyst to the game would go really good with the End. (Amethyst themed blocks would be really cool! Polished Amethyst, Amethyst Bricks, etc. Maybe they make incredibly satisfying noises when you walk on them?) There could be an Amethyst themed biome that consists of crystal shards suspended in the void.
Most of Yung's mods are pretty cool! I highly recommend them. Before 1.18, if you wanted decent caves, Yung's the guy you go to. I'm not too into mods either, though there are some that really enhance the vanilla game without feeling too... moddy.
...Also, I just watched the announcement trailer for this year's Minecraft Live, and this could just be speculation on my part, but there sure do seem to be a lot of references to the End in it. I'm pretty solidly sure that everyone's favorite barren celestial wasteland is next up for an overhaul... but it certainly wouldn't be the first time Mojang surprised everyone and did something completely different.
I guess it's just again important to reiterate the basic ideas, considering what a huge thing the overhaul of one of the game's three dimensions is: Adding unique and useful features that are both functional and atmospheric, essentially. Mojang has done a fantastic job in the past, and if this is what's coming next, I fully expect it to be one of the best updates we've seen yet, Nether Update included.
(What would they even call it? The Update to End all Updates? The Beginning of the End? The Much Needed and Long Awaited Overhaul of a terrifying Transcendent Celestial Void of Barren Rock and Alien Revelations? Don't get me wrong, the Nether Update was fantastic, but the name was far from the most imaginative ever. This is a serious concern.)
UPDATE CONCEPT
The End Update would introduce, among other things; several new biomes, a couple of new creatures to inhabit these biomes, and a general makeover to this late-game dimension, in order to provide a sort of final frontier- a hostile, ultimate destination for the most determined of colonists and adventurers; while still keeping with the existing themes of the End- a Barren, hostile alien world transcendent of the other realms of the game. Breaking things within the Nests is liable to release more hostiles from infested blocks, forcing players to make their way through these confusing catacombs in search of a rare new resource- Elytra Shards, Which can be used to make Elytra, as well as a unique armor set.
New Structure: End Shipwreck ~ Ruined versions of End Ships that generate rarely in any part of the End.
New Material/Creatures: Elytra Shards & Elytron ~ The Elytron are insectoids- arthropods that build dangerous Nests filled with unpleasant, alien beetle creatures. When killed, they have a small chance of dropping Elytron shards- enough shards can be used to craft Elytron Plates, which can be used to make unique Equipment and, most importantly, allow you to craft Elytra. Elytron Equipment would have unlimited enchanting potential, but would have less base durability and protection than Netherite.
The Elytron themselves are quite clever, and difficult to kill. They act as a hive mind, trying to block players paths through their nests, and fight in groups. One variant is capable of flight, and attacks anything that comes to near to the nest. Another type latches onto the player, holding them down while others can attack... and so on and so forth. They're intended to provide a signifigant challenge for experienced players. There ought to be a decent reward in the core of the Nest...
New Enchantments: Powerful enchantments unique to the End:
End Veil ~ Enchant a helmet; allows you to look at Endermen without provoking them, and allows you to see Enderite materials.
Void Heart ~ Item returns to your inventory if dropped into the void, and stays in your inventory if you fall into the void.
End Vision ~ Enchant a helmet; provides the glowing effect from the spectral arrow to all nearby entities.
Lord of Arthropods ~ The opposite of Bane of Arthropods, Attacking something with Lord of Arthropods causes any nearby Silverfish, Spiders, Endermite, and weaker Elytron to attack it as allies. Wearing enough of these will prevent Elytron from attacking you unless provoked. (Though, you'll obviously still have to attack them to get their shards.)
Soul Bind/Divine Binding (Edit) ~ Allyourbasesaregone brings up a pretty good idea for an enchantment unique to the end- a rare, high level enchantment that can be applied to any object, and causes it to remain in your inventory even after death. (Handy, in a place where falling into a bottomless void is always a possibility.)
New Material: Enderite ~ I was trying to think of something that would make mining in the End worthwhile- or at least some sort of material that would be unique, and make sense to find in a ruined ancient city. ...This is what I came up with.
Enderite ore is moderately common in the End, and looks a sort of metallic dark turquoise. It can also be found in cities... though finding it is a bit difficult for reasons that will quickly become obvious. Enderite is themed after the staring mechanics of Endermen- that is it's invisible! You can only see Enderite when you're touching it, along with any blocks directly adjacent; or when something impacts the Enderite. Otherwise, it looks translucent. In this manner, players can create bases that are hidden... simply because they can't be seen unless you have the proper equipment! While various bricks and stone types of Enderite could be made... as well as perhaps an Enderite chest, these would be invisible from a distance. Another idea is an Enderite Detector, which releases a redstone signal of increasing power the longer it's looked at.
These are just some ideas, and by no means a complete concept. (Also, Edit: No End Update in 1.19. Though, looking back, I do think I'd rather have the Overworld updated before the End. Pleasant surprise, I guess?)
That would be cool but it's not gonna happen it would be cool if it did
I certainly think an End Update is possible- even likely. Probably not anything like my speculation, but it is just that- speculation. I mean, Mojang certainly blew me away with the Nether Update. I think that establishes a reasonable precedent for something of an overhaul.
I think it's a bit too early to be sure The End is the very next thing to update.
But I like the sound of these ideas...similar to the Nether but with its own vibe.
You're probably right as the End is very barren. I like that it's a wasteland and I think that it should remain as such, but it would be an improvement to add ruins or minerals to mine for just something to make it worth trekking.
Nope.wav
As long as the End doesn't end up with cheap death causing mechanics I don't care what gets added
imagine being pushed off a 1 block wide bridge that you painstakingly built to get to the outer islands
It's possible Endermen can do this but only if you look at them triggering the aggro effect, and you can't hit them just by placing blocks down, and the player has the full choice to ignore them or wait for them to teleport away, which means the blame is on the player, not the game.
Adding a different hostile mob that could just randomly spawn on the bridge and knock you off without any input like I just mentioned above, that would ruin the End dimension completely, because not all outer islands are within reach of an Ender pearl to make the jump by an alternative method, also using ender pearls risks you falling off the side and dying, potentially causing you to lose a ton of important gear.
I do agree with your above statement though. End should for the most part remain as it is now, it is supposed to be a void with floating islands, almost devoid of any life, its only native inhabitants being Ender Dragon, Endermen and Shulkers.
I think Mojang have this dimension nailed pretty well.
The only change I would agree with to this dimension going forward, is maybe add more islands in the negative Y coordinate after the Caves and Cliffs update, that can only be safely accessed with potion of slow falling, man made water fall with a water bucket, Elytra or ender Pearl.
These islands could have teleporters that send you back to the original island where Ender Dragon was spawned or defeated on.
But these could also have some extra interesting rare loot exclusive to these lower islands only, such as enchantments that cause tools or armour to spawn in the players ender chest if they accidentally fall into the void and die, but only if there are empty slots left in them.
The enchantment could be named, Divine Binding.
Meaning the tool or armour piece is magically bound to the soul of the player who respawned
and they can retrieve it from their ender chest if the requirements are met.
Niche, but I like it. And your points are reasonable.
What I would like to see and I'm sure there's lots out there who want this too, is another dimension to be added to the game with far more mobs and bosses to battle, something similar to Twilight Forest would be a good start imo. The current dimension system is outdated, there should be more than just the End, Nether and Overworld in my honest opinion, and currently the only way to solve this is with mods which isn't good enough.
I've argued the End for the most part is fine the way it is, although some may disagree and is their opinion which they have a right to.
But I would like to see Minecraft get a dimension overhaul in a way that adds more to go to.
What's the Twilight Forest?
You never tried this mod on Java version before? it's great, it's one of my personal favourites. You get to fight wizards in castles, which admittedly I haven't fought legit in survival. But you also get a slew of other mobs that make the realm feel and look like an enchanted dimension. The wizard isn't the only boss in the game but it is a tough one from what I read online.
You also get upgrades to weapons which may be more powerful than even the netherite gear now in vanilla.
You get labyrinths, glaciers with penguins on them and birds that inhabit the forests.
Did I mention that fireflies exist in this mod too? I've talked about this mod on this forum several times before in other threads.
I know Mojang have been slowly adding new creatures to the official game, but there are still far more animal candidates that could be brought to the game and Twilight Forest does hold some of them. Ravens would be cool too, as another type of bird.
Who knows, perhaps the End could have some role in adding new creatures to the game too.
Like End having spawn eggs that you could take with you into the Overworld to spawn and breed certain new animals,
in a similar way to bringing animals through the Twlight Forest portal to add them to the Overworld, presumably for breeding.
Oh I see, thanks
Honestly I love the idea of an end update and all these ideas seem pretty good.
Admittedly, on the topic of strongholds... I think mojang needs to rework how structures generate, like, they need to take cues from roguelikes in order to make combat and area encounters more interesting. Its a pretty nebulous concept for sure, and the only way to flesh it out is to experiment with a mod or something, but heck, I'm tempted to give it a shot...
This is really awesome, I love this. Have you put this on the minecraft feedback website? Tons of people would vote for it. It could really get into the game.
Maybe the chorus lichen could have some sort of teleporting property like most things in the end - like if you walk on it it teleports you randomly...?
Thanks for the feedback! I wanted to respond to some of the things mentioned thusfar:
-I personally don't think there needs to be any more dimensions added to the game, but this is largely just a preference. Mojang has stated before that they intend to stick with three, and it sort of makes sense- each of the existing three dimensions fills a specific gameplay niche. Firstly in terrain, with the Netherworld being entirely underground, and the End being entirely in the sky; but also in terms of progression. Again, just my preference, but I prefer a couple high quality dimensions to lots of simpler ones. (Again, mod developers have made some pretty fantastic dimensions that Mojang wouldn't develop for various reasons.) It's for this reason that I'd rather see the End upgraded than a new dimension added.
-The End shouldn't be annoying or needlessly death inducing; but it also, obviously, ought to be pretty darn hostile, treacherous, etc. Keeping the barren vibe of the existing End, while adding new features to enhance the existing vibe. (Hence the End Ruins/Elytron Nests, which would act as incredibly challenging late game experience. (And would, obviously, be pretty rare. Elytron nests would have a frequency similar to bastions, whereas the End Ruins, while much larger, would be very rare, and filled with dangerous enemies and rare, high-tech materials.
-Strongholds do need work, especially given the recent Caves and Cliffs Update. I really like Yung's new stronghold mod- it's a little over the top, but it gets the idea right, and it's a lot more atmospheric, if not the most challenging.
-I'm not especially into the Minecraft Feedback website, and mostly just enjoy discussing ideas and whatnot, but if anyone else wanted to put it on there, I'd hardly object.
-...And, on a side note, it also occurred to me that the addition of Amethyst to the game would go really good with the End. (Amethyst themed blocks would be really cool! Polished Amethyst, Amethyst Bricks, etc. Maybe they make incredibly satisfying noises when you walk on them?) There could be an Amethyst themed biome that consists of crystal shards suspended in the void.
BTW I'm not really into mods.
Although this stronghold mod sounds cool ^.
Most of Yung's mods are pretty cool! I highly recommend them. Before 1.18, if you wanted decent caves, Yung's the guy you go to. I'm not too into mods either, though there are some that really enhance the vanilla game without feeling too... moddy.
...Also, I just watched the announcement trailer for this year's Minecraft Live, and this could just be speculation on my part, but there sure do seem to be a lot of references to the End in it. I'm pretty solidly sure that everyone's favorite barren celestial wasteland is next up for an overhaul... but it certainly wouldn't be the first time Mojang surprised everyone and did something completely different.
I guess it's just again important to reiterate the basic ideas, considering what a huge thing the overhaul of one of the game's three dimensions is: Adding unique and useful features that are both functional and atmospheric, essentially. Mojang has done a fantastic job in the past, and if this is what's coming next, I fully expect it to be one of the best updates we've seen yet, Nether Update included.
(What would they even call it? The Update to End all Updates? The Beginning of the End? The Much Needed and Long Awaited Overhaul of a terrifying Transcendent Celestial Void of Barren Rock and Alien Revelations? Don't get me wrong, the Nether Update was fantastic, but the name was far from the most imaginative ever. This is a serious concern.)
