Fire can be pretty devastating in Minecraft- simply because of how easily it can spread wildly out control. However, I think there are some tweaks that could make it both more aesthetically interesting, and more of a thing players want to watch out for. These are just some general suggestions! I'm aware that, if something like this was implemented, it would doubtlessly require lots of balancing and tweaks.
Fire should create Smoke like Campfires ~ One of the most useful bits of campfires is using them as a sort of beacon with which to find your base. ...But the smoke from ordinary fires has a different particle effect, and doesn't go nearly as high. For consistency's sake, it would be nice if the effect was changed to be similar- and if fires generated more smoke, it could be helpful for designing braziers and other sorts of signal fires. ...This would probably only work in the Overworld.
Fire should Generate Ash & Charred Blocks ~ When fire burns up a block, it should generate ash- Ash would act similar to snow in that it would form layers of sooty grey powder. Walking through ash could slow players down, and digging through ash would have a chance of producing a bit of charcoal. In addition, when blocks are burnt, they could have a chance to become charred versions of themselves without actually being destroyed. (Wood Blocks, that is.) Charred Planks and Charred Logs would break very easily- but could be harvested with silk touch for a unique, ruddy black wood texture. For the most part, this suggestion would hope to make forest fires seem a little more realistic- or at least a little more devastating. This could also be implemented in the Nether's Basalt Deltas; and could be a part of a new charred forest biome.
...That's pretty much it. I would appreciate feedback as to whether this idea is good, pointless, horrendously terrible, or otherwise! It just sort of randomly occurred to me that fires in Minecraft can be sort of underwhelming. Well, minus the horrible realization that building a base entirely out of wood probably wasn't a great idea.
Edit ~ I added some concept art for charred blocks, as well as the destruction of my beautiful home. This is just a concept, and isn't intended to represent exactly how such a mechanic could work.
- There should definitely only be one variant charred wood. It wouldn't make sense to have a separate, 'charred' version of every wood plank and log block. (...Ahem, I'm looking at you, 'Coral.')
-Charred wood could have some unique properties that would make it worth farming- it could, for example, break if something lands on it from high enough. Also, it might be worthwhile to make it so that charred blocks break if unsupported- just so that you don't have a bunch of them floating around in midair following a fire. ...On the other hand, things floating around in midair isn't unheard of in Minecraft....
-This could be a (somewhat) sustainable means of farming charcoal. If charred blocks or ash have a decent chance of dropping charcoal, and break when moved by a piston, a farm could be set up in which you place a bunch of wooden blocks, which can then be pushed into fire by pistons, and broken for charcoal.

I quotet you out of context, becouse i'd like to add the suggestion that charred woodblocks could dropp chorcoal when chopped.
And I also like the idea of adding smoke particles to fire! That could alarm the players about spreading fire while also signaling easy fuel / torch ressources.
That amount of particles will probably kill the world for just a small fire, like say burning down your starter house. Imagine if a mansion were to burn down or a large forest (with or without the firespread bug from...1.13 snapshots?...that reverted firespread to be fast enough you could see it rolling across the horizon.)

Particles can be adjusted in the video settings, i don't think they impact the world.
But i don't know that for sure.
I actually started with the Aquatic update, i did not know about this bug.
I was a bit disapointed, when i first found a jungle and tried to burn it down.
Exept from my starter house experiments with having a glass floor with lava beneath it i didn't have much trouble since,
when it just comes to fire spreading.
Sure my next lava bath might be arount the corner but dieing to fire is something i did not experience often.
I actually think these ideas are pretty decent. "Charred" Logs should probably be a single block rather than a variant of each type of wood, but I'm down for it either way

I agree. That would mess up my inventory...
