This is a bad idea, because if arranged in the wrong way the fireballs going through the nether portal could ruin people's builds by a misfire, and let's face it, not every one of our builds will be done with obsidian or even stone on the outside, some builds have wooden exteriors which can burn, and what do Ghast fireballs do in addition to explosive damage? they ignite.
Be it a misfire or not, the result is the same. I'd like changes to the game to keep auto griefing down to a minimum.
I'm not talking about Creepers or Withers obviously, we have control over those.
But without encasing a nether portal inside a large stone structure or cave of some kind this feature will be difficult if not impossible to damage control
If I wanted Ghasts in the overworld some place I'd build a gigantic portal in the Nether somewhere distant.
But I don't much like the idea of Ghast fireballs just randomly coming through a small portal out in the open.
Personally I'd find it far less annoying if Ghasts remained as they are now, able to destroy unprotected portals,

Agreed as well. If fireballs just randomly exit your nether portal, there is a very high risk of damaging something, but that can be circumvented setting MobGriefing to false, if I'm not mistaken.
achievement idea: make a ghast shoot a fireball through a nether portal and kill a hostile creature or iron golem
The fireball breaks the nether portal if I'm not mistaken
