When amethyst was introduced during the Minecraft Live event on October 2020, I was very excited to see this new gem. However I felt that not a lot of uses were available for amethyst, while I am sure that mojang has future plans for amethyst, I had quite a few ideas for what amethyst could add to the game:
When the player finds and collects a fully “grown” amethyst crystal, they would have the option of turning it into an amethyst shard. This shard, when used in the smithing table, could be used to tip any kind of sword. Adding an amethyst tip to a sword would add +1 attack damage to the weapon. This addition would give amethyst a unique use as well as giving the smithing table a wider variety of usage areas. As for how the amethyst crystal could be crushed, there are quite a few options. Mojang could add a new tool, like a hammer, to crush the crystal to form a shard for the tip. Or the creation of the shard could simply be done in the crafting grid.
I don't like this idea, everybody would use these amethyst tips, and they are way too farmable. If we are to smith with something, I would rather see a material like netherite applicable to entire toolset and actually changing material you repair the tool with.
My alternative proposal are amethyst arrowheads as alternative to flint arrowheads - they would feature greatly improved velocity and precision, as well as decreased falloff... at cost of reduced damage by 20-30%, and lack of option to infuse the projectile with glowstone or potion. It's something for something.
