BUNDLE FEATURES 1.17
First lets talk about what they showed us about the bundle;
- Takes up one inventory slot
- It can hold up to a stack of items (64)
- items can be mixed (e.g. 32 sticks, 32 cobble)
- When hovering over the bundle it shows you the items
- Items can be placed in the bundle as well as taken out of the bundle in a players inventory (meaning you dont have to place it down like a shulker box, but you also don't seem to have to put it in your hotbar to access it)
Now before I give my opinion and suggestions I just want to say that what the 1.17 update looks incredible and shows that Mojang listens to their community. Because of that I think it's important we give our opinion and input on all things shown to not only give creative input, but to assist Mojang in the development of these features. I understand that what we were shown during the live show is just a concept and nothing final, however since that is all we have it's what i'll be basing my opinion and suggestions on. Please join in on this conversation as I would love to hear and see everyone's input.
Inventory slots + Number of items + Inventory management
The actual amount of attainable items currently in the game (as of 1.16) is argued about on r/Minecraft, however it seems that it's somewhere between 950-1050 items (If interested I can provide you with a few reddit links). As a survival player myself I know how time consuming and frustrating organizing items can be. Currently in vanilla minecraft you have 4 armor slots, 27 inventory slots, 9 hotbar slots and one off-hand slot. The armor slots can only be taken up by armor so can't be used to transfer items and the off-hand slot can only carry a shield in bedrock edition (java allows all items I believe). So java has 27 (Inventory slots) + 9 (Hotbar slots) +1 (Off-hand slot) = 37 inventory slots (bedrock has 36). So we can carry 36-37 different items when there are around a 1000 available. Anyone that plays survival minecraft knows what a pain this can be. When I start out on a minecraft world I enjoy exploring before I settle down and build a base etc. I always enjoy this part and I know many do, but it's cut (very) short due to inventory space. After exploring a village or 2, a desert temple and a shipwreck I oftend find my inventory filled. I either have to find a spot and settle down as I can't carry more items, or I start tossing out "less" valuable items for more valuable ones. Either way it limits the exploration/adventure style play and interupts a player's "flow" state while playing.
Shulker boxes
Shulker boxes surely are nice, however they:
- have to be placed down to use
- you can't see all the items in them (unless you're using a mod)
- they are only obtainable in end game
- require just as much organizing as your actual inventory
I won't go to much in depth on this as this post is not on suggestions for the shulker box (which could use a few tweeks), but did want to mention it.
Thoughts on and suggestions for the bundle
Now at first glance the bundle looks amazing.
When compared to the shulker it;
- Doesn't have to be placed down (can be used directly in a players inventory)
- You can see all the items in it
- They are obtainable early game (ASSUMPTION)
(Possible) Problems
- Only holds a stack of items and takes up an inventory slot, just like a normal stack of items. The fact that you can mix and match items is great, however 64 is still a small number.
- For this to be useful and allow for a longer exploration/adventure style gameplay you would need a lot of bundles. Which means you need a lot of materials, which means you need a farm of some sort (im assuming the recipe includes leather and string, so a cow and spider or mob farm) which takes time and definitely limits the exploration style or at least puts it on hold.
- There is no way to see how many items are actually in a bundle which leaves you guessing on how many items can still fit. If you do want to count them and check, you're going to have to open the bundle which then explodes in your already full inventory. Putting all the items back in and re-counting seems like an even more tedious process. You're going to be left micromanaging the bundles.
- The texture looks like it's out of a modpack.
Suggestions
- Besides adding the bundles, update the players inventory. I'll leave this for another post but a few suggestions would be adding another row or 2 of inventory slots or adding *special* slots for e.g. arrows.
- I'm assuming they're easy to craft. Make it harder, but instead make it a "larger" bundle (or a backpack like any other survival game). You can even add an extra inventory slot next to the armor (body) where a player can put it and it adds 2 row of inventory slots vertically.
Knowing Mojang (not a dig) they probably want to somehow stick to the bundles and not change too much so i'm assuming the first two suggestions won't be considered.
For the actual bundle
- Add a counter in the bundle or make it clearer to see how many items are in the bundle. The little blue bar in the bottom works for 2 different items of 32, however if you have 6 different items (e.g. flowers) in there it get's very hard to speculate how much room is left. A small number under the item in the bundle would fix this issue.
- Add them to chests found in villages, dungeons etc. as this would allow players to keep exploring and use the bundles they find, rather than having to constantly farm for the materials and delay and halt their adventure style play.
- The player should be able to take out items from the bundle without having to open it and have all the items come out. This will just create more clutter and require even more inventory managing.
Bundle on a stick?
You know how some people back in the day would tie a bundle or a bag on a stick to make it easier to carry? What if when you craft a bundle on a stick and put it in your off-hand it's easier to access. Meaning you would be able to see the items clearer and could take them out and put them in the bundle without all the items coming out. Kind of a chest in hand, but smaller. This would be balanced as it doesn't have a lot of inventory space, but allows you to just have a little bit more direct inventory to access things as food, currency (emeralds), sheers, flint and steel, rockets, torches etc.
Going through the post, I think you've completely missed the point of bundles. They aren't meant for increasing inventory (a niche filled by shulker boxes). They're meant to prevent inventory clutter, because Mojang plans to add a lot more andesites, granites and diorites from the looks of it. From this viewpoint, majority of your suggestion is moot.

Like you mentioned they are adding even more items to the game, so besides making your inventory more messy it makes it more full. How exactly do you see bundles preventing inventory clutter if I may ask?
The bundle still takes up space, having many of them = clutter
No good indication of how many items are in the bundle and how much space is left which requires you to open it to find out. if you have many items in there that come out when opening = clutter
Not allowing single items to be removed and having to open a bundle for just one item releases all the other items, which again creates clutter.
I appreciate your input and maybe I did miss the point of the bundle, however bundles do not prevent inventory clutter in the slightest, it postpones it at its best.
Prevent doesn't necessarily mean "eliminate entirely". If it postpones the clutter problem for enough time for a typical player to go on an adventure and then return home to drop stuff in their chests, the clutter problem has still been prevented.
I like the idea of changing how the bundles display how full they are but not necessarily by replacing the bar with a number. I think color coding the bar would be better.
Empty: 0 items
Blue: 1-16 items
Green: 17-32 items
Yellow: 33-48 items
Orange: 49-56 items
Red: 57-63 items
No Bar: Full
It still isn't exact but it can give you more information at a glance than just looking at a bar that does not change colors. Additionally I would say add the exact number to the tooltip when you mouse over once. So it says "Bundle x/64"
I agree it would be nice to be able to open a bundle and manage the contents rather than removing everything at once. There is definitely enough space in the inventory screen to add 16 slots and a button to change pages when you right click a bundle to do proper inventory management.

I was sketch on them at first but I think Bundles are fine as they're being presented. Shulker Boxes are by far the best option for maximizing your storage capacity, particularly if you're talking about stacking items (i.e. one Shulker Box can hold 1728 of a given block, while a Bundle can only hold 64--the same as if you just had it sitting in your inventory). Where the Bundle is better is if you have a large variety of low-stack items (i.e. lots of tools, armor, etc), because it essentially allows you to "stack" them. While this does increase your inventory space, it... honestly isn't in a way that's going to seriously undercut where Shulker Boxes are at their most useful... but that's the point. Bundles aren't supposed to compete with Shulker Boxes. They address a different issue.
That said, I would like if they have a UI to manage item storage, rather than just dumping everything inside at once.
Bundles...limited to a single stack, can have multiple item types, retain their inventory, can fill from within inventory, can be given to other players
Shulker boxes...can have multiple item types, has 27 item slots, retain their inventory, can be given to other players
Bundles seem like the same kind of item concept that shulker boxes were created for, so not sure why bundles would have feature(s) not present in the later-game item with similar function.

I'm pretty sure it has a durability bar of sorts to display how full it is. I can't remember where I saw it (I'm assuming it wasn't the main Minecraft Live video because you haven't seen it apparently), so it was probably Mr Henrik's stream or something. I think there was also a texture change, but I can't remember for sure.
Also, from what I can tell, you hover over a bundle to display the items inside.

You make a good point and I actually really like the idea of color coding it. It keeps the original idea of the bar to indicate the space of the bundle, but makes it a little bit easier to tell how much space (approximately) is left.
