The story thing probably isn't going to happen officially, though it is entirely possible through the creative and extensive use of data packs, custom world configurations, resource packs, etc.

Remember those versions that minecraft pranked us with? Specifically:
Minecraft 2.0
Minecraft 1.VR-Pre1
Snapshot 15w14a
Minecraft 3D
Those are still downloadable! Watch this video for 2.0:
To download the other ones you need to make a folder in the versions folder for minecraft and put the client and JSON file for the versions in there. They all need to be named the same aside from file extensions. Once you do that, you will be able to choose that version when making a new profile with the minecraft launcher.
Please Mojang if you're reading this please overhaul the Overworld with new Adventures and a overall Story to the game!
Vanilla minecraft is designed mostly as sandbox game, not linear story.
Even "beating Minecraft", considered fairly universal aim, is not remotely a true end to the game, since you can carry on as usual with even bigger perspectives afterwards, and is not really linear, due to the variety of strategies usable to reach it.
For a strictly linear story, I propose to get Minecraft Dungeons or join some adventure/roleplay server.

They want you to make the story. Part of that is the new archaeology feature that is coming.
