You should be able to haul out x-on a stick tools in order to lure pigs, striders, rabbits, etc. towards you and hoglins away from you.
With striders it is particularly annoying to have to bridge out over lava to one to lure it over to you, as has been said. Allowing you to cast a line to it to draw it towards you would massively help.
As well, fishing in lava might be a fun idea for the Nether, where you can fish up random scraps with small chances (nether brick, quartz, gold or iron nuggets, a small chance of netherite scrap), except that you need to be in 'open seas' to get netherite or quartz (i.e. on a strider, which makes it hard to fish).
Fishing with a carrot in water, carrot in lava, or fungus in water, should also have interesting (and odd drops)
-perhaps fungus in water gives you more junk than a normal rod, carrots more fish.
Carrots in lava should probably cause you to anger nearby piglins or something, lol.
If your line reaches far enough, also, you can't reel or pull with a x-on-a-stick at all and you can't uncraft the x off of it either. So you'd need 2 tools.
Plus, a dangling fungus has let's say 20 reach and a strider smell of 16 blocks, that's 36 vs 20 distance away to reach the stridey.
Also, this could be very useful for keeping hogs at bay, as they tend to ignore fungus in my case and still come after me.

You can pull mobs towards you with a fishing rod.
Just testing.
