I think a lot of people want a way to play with friends on the java edition without making a server, or using third-party software. The way I'd do this is similar to the bedrock edition to the game. But instead of XBOX Live friends, it would be cool to just open to LAN, get a port made of more numbers (for it being different) and send it to someone. If that person enters the port, it would ask the host if he would accept the join request. A whitelist/blacklist mechanic should also be added.
I don't know about this, it's just how I would improve multiplayer Minecraft.
But if Minecraft Multiplayer improves, people won't buy realms as much. They're not going to go out of their way to add in features that will make them less money.
It's not going to work unless they implement some sort of vpn in the game or in the launcher, simply because your router is not going to allow the traffic inbound. And if it does, you shouldn't want it to do it. It's basic security.
