Raccoons would be a little like foxes, though less skittish. Nocturnal, finding caves or trees to sleep under during the day. They would spawn in Dark Forest and Taiga biomes, often times near villages. They typically eat berries and fish in the wild, but if they live in a village they'll additionally eat chickens, eggs, compost, and even some crops! This could be quite an annoyance to players as well... making minecraft just the slightest bit more challenging and fun! They usually run away when attacked and foxes will try to eat baby raccoons. They will follow a player who is holding bread or cookies in their hand, and can be bred with either of these items. I'll leave it up to mojang whether or not they can be tamed, especially since they probably won't read this.
Additional information
•Raccoons would also have unique animations for when digging in compost bins, eating, etc.
•Sometimes Raccoons gather near rivers in the day.
Is there any benefit to them being in the game? Even bats have a tiny purpose, being that they help you find caves. Something that's destructive without any drops or other purposes besides causing chaos is a bad idea.
No support until further detail is given.

Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.

If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
The Meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything.

I like the concept of raccoons, with a few changes.
It seems to me that Mojang has it so that you have the reasonable expectation that if you leave for a period of time, you can come back to your base and find that not much has changed, save for the block an enderman may have stolen.
Things that disrupt blocks are usually only triggered by the player, such as creepers exploding. Basically any damage to terrain or chests is the players fault.
Raccoons are a controversial subject in the way that in real life, they do eat garbage, compost, and baby chickens. The question is how that could be reasonably implemented without causing chaos on the players property, and what it's point would be. Basically, what would they do? What incentive would you have to search them out? The recently added foxes have limited uses. Foxes only real purpose is their ability to hold items, ie swords, and that makes them useful as a defense. But it is a purpose nontheless, besides just being a general ambiance mob.
It would be plain annoying to have them just run around eating your crops, chickens, and compost.
If anything, perhaps they would only attack baby chickens, and maybe fish if the fish came close enough to shore. Digging in compost would be realistic, but minecraft isn't very realistic.
But still the problem with every time raccoons have been suggested is that there is no real purpose besides being annoying. It wouldn't have to be realistic necessarily, especially considering there isn't much realism in dolphins finding buried treasure or foxes attacking things with swords, but there has to be something.
