We have minecarts with furnaces, chests and all kinds of functional blocks, so why not make boats with them as well? Or at least with the chest. It would make moving and saving one's equipment much more convenient.
It could be done the way horse (donkeys and mules) inventories are, in that it's tacked seamlessly onto the player inventory. The boat data already has the nbt data for the passenger (the chest), and presumably this would then expose the nbt data of the chest (ie, the contents), so I don't anticipate this being a huge deal other than "should we...".
That said, here are some situations where this could be a good or bad thing:
1)mobs that have storage capability (donkeys/mules and llamas) are large mobs with large hitboxes. This means there are interaction issues regarding the hitbox of the boat such as the near-perfect overlapping that results in any attempted interaction with the boat (like trying to get in one or breaking the boat) targets the mob instead. Having a smaller object would make this a good thing.
2)potential balance issue. If I recall, one can mount a horse in a boat and thereby have a boat that has storage capacity PLUS 2 passenger seating. If the intent of boats in general and boat-related suggestions like this is to preserve a sense of limited capacity (that is, you can have one passenger plus a chest or you can have 2 passengers but not both) then having the horse obviously breaks the concept. I don't actually see a fix to this issue, but if players are only using the horses as an approximation to this feature then an actual fix probably isn't needed as players will likely naturally move towards the more convenient alternative (the smaller-hitbox chest).
3)boats are more "durable". By that I mean the boat will never break because of collision. Leads can break if the mob somehow gets stuck on something (this is not something that would normally occur on the ocean, but it could occur in a riverway or a swamp), causing the lead to stretch too far. Technically the mob could also die from "collateral damage" (nothing naturally targets horses, except maybe Withers...but who is dumb enough to take a horse to a Wither fight anyways?!) but this is likely even less of a concern.

Both boats and mobs are easily broken/killed by trident hits.
okay, so I totally forgot about animals with inventory >.< that's a fair point
if only they weren't so rare... but I guess Minecraft shouldn't be easy, huh

Support, although I kind of can't see how the player could access the chest in the boat.

maybe they don't - just get out of boat onto land to access the chest by shift-clicking the boat or something.
Definately support as it would make transporting easier & you don't have to rely on standard inventory to store stuff you would rarely use
How would this be an improvement over sticking a donkey, mule or llama in the boat and/or towing one or more behind on a lead?
Just testing.

We have shulker boxes, so no but if I were on the “maybe side,” perhaps this boat chest will have to be pulled via a lead.
Lucky number 13!

yeah, good point, too (though personally, I'd prefer a simple backpack instead, but that'd be too easy, I guess)
(I mean, the shulker boxes, sorry, thought "reply" would quote that, too ;-; my title says it all, guys)
