Rabbits are pets in some parts of the world, for example in the USA (I think).
However, the rabbits that are currently in the game are evasive and not very playful ... they do not look like pet rabbits.
I suggest adding a "tamed" version of the rabbit, perhaps "fluffy rabbit", "coney" or simply "tamed rabbit", which will follow the player and obey him (sit or stand when right-click).
Fluffy rabbit:
Fluffy rabbit will basically act like cats and dogs. You can "sit it" by right clicking and "stand it" by right clicking (is this well written?).
Fluffy rabbits, however, will be evassive in pressence of villagers, monsters and wolves; so, it isn't a good idea take fluffy rabbit for adventure time.
Also, fluffy rabbits don't drop food nor experience when killed (as it happens with dogs and cats).
How to tame a rabbit?
I would bet on the use of golden carrots, simply and easily.
When you tames a rabbit, it will keep the skin, but it will swell a bit the model. (?)
Utility?
Well, It's a pet... but if it's not enough to convince you, maybe it could be also useful like cats, dogs and parrots.
For example, fluffy bunny could attract and distract baby zombies to prevent these from attacking to the player.
And also, these could attract and distract villager babies (no, villagers won't attack you).

There is not much use for the rabbit rather than attracting baby mobs. Baby zombies are very rare so theres not really a reason to add these other than a "silly funny" addition like parrots dancing, which I despise of.
It's not useful but I still like it. Maybe just carrot as the taming item rather than golden carrots and maybe still drops raw rabbit when killed but no experience.

So you don't like adding silly fun stuff to a game about having fun? Why?
This seems like a pretty good addition, having actual rabbit pets would be great rather than just imprisoning them.
Actually, it can be the war mob... because in reality, rabbits have dangerous claws that usually hits into eyes. They can attack zombies and blind them for 8-12 seconds (scaaaaary XD)

Young children like rabbits, right?
Get bored is bad.
Other than not having drops, what differences would there be between a 'tamed rabbit' and a name-tagged rabbit?
(A possible distraction effect on villager young and chuckies is mentioned, but not detailed…
Following the player can be accomplisjed with a lead…
Only the 'sit' command remains… which seems insufficient to justify adding tamed rabbits.)

I like "silly fun stuff" if theres a purpose for it in the game.
