This is sort of a double suggestion, if that's alright with you. Besides, these go hand in hand with each other.
If this post ends up broken (images appearing as links or whatever), I'm not sure why. It's out of my control and I haven't found a way to counter it.
Sand Traps!
Sand traps will spawn exclusively in deserts, and are the main source of desert spiders (more info later). If a player is about 10 blocks within distance of the sand trap, it'll break & summon 2-3 sand spiders that'll charge at the player immediately. It's advised that you keep a sharp eye out for these, if unprepared for a short standoff. Every desert biome will have at least 10-20 of these scattered across.

Sand Spiders!
Sand spiders are a desert exclusive mob that'll spawn regularly (same spawn rate as a witch), but also appear from sand traps. These new spider variants retain the same size as cave spiders, but have a lighter brown shade as opposed to what regular spiders have.

EXAMPLE OF SANDTRAP'S RADIUS
Also I'm not gonna spend the next hour or two trying to beat the embedding system, so enjoy the extremely upscaled images I guess.

The desert always has been bland, and maybe some more combat other than husks would help it alot. Mojang seemed like it would make a wide variety of spiders when they made the cave spider, but they never really added any other types. though some deserts are very small so i would suggest 1 spider trap every 10 chunks
I like this, would make the sand biome a bit more interesting. The only change I suggest is make the sand trap a 2 block radius instead of 10, so you can avoid the traps I find you pay attention- currently it is unlikely for someone to notice it on the other side of a hill.
Having it activate within 2 blocks, especially with the multiple amount of spiders that spawns AROUND it, seems a bit overkill. 10 gives the player more time to react than 2.
I like the core idea but to be honest I'd rather it be a scorpion or antlion or something other than yet another mob that looks similar to existing mobs but with a small twist.
Regardless of the actual mob used, I think a more fair way to trigger these traps would be to walk over them. Maybe the trap blocks could spawn in 3x3 squares and when you step on that area you hear a tunneling/digging sound for 2-5 seconds before they spawn? That way you get a decent amount of warning before they spawn, and it negates the possibility of players being "punished" just for getting too close to a block they may not be able to even see.

Bringing back the brown spider is a great idea!
Support.

support, but the desert spider could also drop a sand block, it is useful
I Like Minecraft! and I hate being killed by mobs or by the Minecraft environment.
