Most lightning rod proposals seem more interested in creating overpowered items or making creeper charging or mob conversion (witch or pigman) easy. [Much of the opposition to various proposals seems to have been based on these aspects.]
Of those listed, the first and last are most focused on the actual lightning rod as a way to protect areas (although 2850398-tall-metal-structures-attract-lightning brings electricty into the mix).
With the coming addition of the channeling enchantment, mob transformation and creeper charging are no longer important considerations… although allowing a less efficient alternative way of enhancing the natural chance of such occurances may still be useful….
A comparatively easy to craft [not first day, but far from end-game] item that would protect a limited area from natural (ie. not channeling produced) lightning would be, IMO, a useful addition.
This would allow far more variation in above-ground construction without needing to add roofs 3 blocks up and 6 blocks out in each direction.
2609312-iron-bars-as-lightning-rods [from tank_101] proposes a 20 radius AoE [area of effect], I think limiting this to the chunk in which the lightning rod is located might be simpler.
My reading of this proposal indicates it affects only where the lightning strikes; matters proceed as normal from that point.
Providing a late-game enhancement to this proposal [possibly by adding an end rod beneath the trio of iron bars ?] that would also prevent lightning summoned by channeling might also be a viable addition.
[With regard to placement: allowing the lighting rod to be placed horizontally (posible if "They would be placed like end rods" ) seems "wrong"; the iconic vertical spire is something I'd like to preserve.
The multi-block structure and additional conditions of tank_101's proposal seem more balanced to me than a single block item… (although a construct that could be hidden under blocks while remaining effective has appealing potential as well).]

WARNING: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to you, mine what you can from it & bin the rest.
If I could work out an unambiguous way to detect the "storm" condition, I've thought of having a command block summon lightning to an iron bar on top of a tower just for looks. If I've access to /op to do command blocks, it never occurred to me to bother with using it for OP gear or charging creepers.
This has probably been done many, many times, but I'm going to put this here anyways.
I'm not sure how they'd be crafted, maybe with blaze rods, redstone and iron, but I'm not sure.
During thunderstorms, lightning would be more likely to strike them somehow.
They would be placed like end rods and have the same hitboxes as them.
What do you think?
Hello
Variations on lightning protection have indeed been proposed before: a sampling from 01Jan16 to present
