Currently, compasses take you to your spawn point, but why not to your bed? This would create a use for gold and compasses!
What:
The Gold Compass takes you to where you last slept, if you don't have a bed, it won't take you anywhere. And yes, you can use the Gold Compass to craft a normal regular map.
How:
The crafting recipe would be one compass in the middle square with 8 golden nuggets surrounding it.
Benefits:
1. Compasses could become useful again.
2. Gold could be worth mining.
3. If you get lost with no map, it's a bit easier to find your way home.
I'm not a fan of long crafting chains, but I guess we can make an exception here...
I would say that this is overpowered, but really it's not. In fact, it's really really underpowered when coordinates are a thing. If you can make sure your base is visible from about 50-100 blocks away, and you can spot an easily memorable coordinate (I find that factors of 100 are easiest to remember) then you can find your base without much trouble.
This is one of the reasons it might be worth removing coordinates from survival mode. (Although there are good reasons to keep it in, too. Or perhaps there should be more tools to show coordinates in survival mode in a balanced way?)

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.
I'm not sure I agree with the given reasoning*, but I also don't have objections to this being a thing. So, I'm saying: support.
(existing iron compasses get used if one makes maps of a large territory and gold gets used if one is involved in equine breeding. It's possible to keep multiple beds within an explored territory and make new ones. So, the gold compass seeking the bed would only find last used bed. If gold compass can also make maps, that devalues iron compass.)
What about a homing device that uses gold and/or redstone that helps one locate a set point of their choosing not necessarily bed or spawnpoint?
No it's not. The clock's recipe is redstone dust surrounded by gold ingots (not the diagonals) in the same way the compass is made except with iron ingots. There is no such thing as a watch in any vanilla editions of minecraft.
That or they can just have the compass point towards the player's bed. Partial Support
I agree. Compasses are stupid and should point towards a player's bed instead of spawnpoint. I don't think having a gold compass would be required because the gold version is simply a clock. This would be like making an iron clock with seperate features. You would be able to update the compass to the bed by right clicking the bed with it.

AMPPL50 was responding to the OPs original recipe, which was "The same as the normal compass but the iron is replaced with gold". The OP adjusted their recipe after being informed about the conflict.

Good idea, although I prefer it without the Gold Compass being usable to craft "a normal regular map"….

Another, good idea… possibly two
1) Points to one non resettable point (Obsidian Compass)
Redstone in the center; Gold Ingots in the corners, Obsidian in the sides
Place the newly crafted Obsidian Compass to set the point, mine it to convert it to an unplacable (except in chest/item frame/etc.) item form. (same rules as obsidian placement/mining)
2) Points to a resettable point (Diamond Compass)
Place the Diamond Compass to set the point, mine it to convert it to item form. (same rules as diamond block placement/mining)
If mined without Silk Touch, drops 1-4 gold ingots, 1-4 diamonds, redstone is lost. [Possibly Fortune effects do not apply?]

Oh, okay. I'm gonna have to adjust my recipe.
