Ok i have an idea for notch and a very good idea, i figured how the nether could work out in multiplayer without a map change. First of all i thought hmm if we put the nether very far away from where u spawn like 25 000 blocks away from spawn the nether could be created in a big giant square and nether properties would spawn in there and when you walk through a portal it teleports u there but then i thought it was just stupid so then i used the idea of putting it far away from spawn to this one. Bedrock is currently not destroyable. Sooo we could make the nether on the opposite side of the minecraft world. Notch could make the nether underneath bedrock for every created world and bedrock could be the roof. Mobs could only spawn in that area of the nether. So great idea aye? :biggrin.gif:
Nuh unh.
1) 25000 blocks from spawn? In which direction? Is it a ring of hell around paradise?
2) All SMP maps are modified SSP maps. What you do to SMP would also happen to SSP
3) This would make it too easy to reach, even at 25000 meters away
4) This would totally screw up the teleport system enabled by portals.
5) It doesn't go good with my personal vibe thing-a-ma-jig.
Considering most minecraft servers DO infact go beyond 25,000 squares in every direction most of the time, running into the nether would be amazingly easy.
I guess if they put the nether UNDER the bedrock layer of the main map it would remain inaccessible without looking out of place or easy to see, but then that would be pressing the map boundaries too far and making the computers of the users process a lot of unneeded areas anyway.
Also, multiple portals means that waypoints they make would be broken so that multiple portals lead to the same portal in the nether, and portals made after that would only lead to ONE area, which means it's ability to allow travel across a large amount of land would be negated.
It's just that Notch/Mojang have not found a way to run the Nether in SMP yet.
