Machetes would not mainly be a new type of weapon, rather a new item for clearing areas.
Crafting
I'm not a hundred percent certain on a recipe, but a possibility is a shapeless shears and iron sword, as the machete would have a similar funtionality to the two combined. Another possibility is two iron bars and a stick, since the machete wouldn't be needed to attack so it wouldn't need to be as thick as a sword.
A machete would have the same durability as the iron tier. (251)
Usage
Machetes would be used the same way a sword or shears would be used to clear plants. All leaves breaking would be instant. Breaking any type of plant or hitting a mob will use 1 durability, breaking anything else will use two durability. Machetes are used as weapons in real life, but to avoid overpowering the iron sword machetes would be functionally similar to stone swords in combat.
The biggest problem with shears is that everything you break with them, whether tall grass or leaves, will drop. Swords can still be sued and drop seeds and saplings, along with apples under the right condition. Any plants broken with a machete would never drop anything, making it more useful for clearing large areas without filling up an inventory.
[Suggested by Badprenup] The machete would have a sweeping edge of its own, allowing up to 6 plants to be cleared at once.
Machetes can be put into an enchantment table to get any sword enchantments and can get Mending via an anvil.
To be honest I would never craft this as it currently is. I would either just punch everything for free or if I needed to clear a large area I would use a Bucket. The minor inconvenience of having to press E and click twice isn't a huge deal to me. Although I suppose it would be nice for clearing Jungle brush.
I would like this a lot better if it worked like the sweeping attack with the sword, clearing up to 6 grass/leaves in front of you with a single swipe. That would make it much nicer.

When I came up with the idea, clearing out large areas of jungle is what I had in mind. With all the leaves and tall grass on the jungle floor, clearing it off with shears would fill up your inventory very quickly, which is an absolute nightmare if you're not interested in storing a hundred thousand leaves.

That's actually a very good idea, and would definitely make a machete more viable for clearing.

Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
Honestly, the big problem I find with these foliage-clearing tool suggestions is that there already exist quite a few ways you can deal with the problem:
- Fire (For large areas you need to be cleared out.)
- Swords (Yes, they actually do clear foliage faster according to the Minecraft Wiki. It doesn't seem to matter which tier, so you could just use a stone sword.)
- Shears, of course. (Sure, you end up with a lot of leaf blocks, but you end up with a lot of cobblestone when you go mining, and nobody seems to have a problem with that.)
- Chopping down trees and just waiting for leafdecay to happen. (Which doesn't seem to be a problem nowadays, because people will gladly AFK while watching Youtube/Netflix.)
And other than that, do we really need another tool that the player needs to carry around with them all the time? Every new tool just uses up more Inventory Space. (And enchantments like Silk Touch and Fortune don't help, because I want to use those tools in specific conditions too.)

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.
