This could be looked at different ways. On one hand, part of the fun of Minecraft is having to find out the game yourself, either guessing recipes, or looking it up in the Wiki. Part of the fun is looking at tutorials.
The other way of looking at it, no game shouldn't have some sort of instructions. There should always be something in-game to guide you through so you don't get confused and have to watch tutorials or look at the Wiki, because that can be a lot of work, and Mojang already added it, and it would be sad to remove such a huge feature so quickly.

Why? if you don't want the crafting guide, don't use it. you can hide it. and, you can only see the recipe that you've discovered.
Quote from Dinnerbone
The way it works in vanilla survival* is that you either "discover" a recipe by crafting it manually, or some other condition where we think "okay now you have sticks, we'll teach you how to make a pickaxe".
After a recipe is "discovered" it's available in this recipe book, an
optional thing you can click to in a crafting screen. From there you can
see all the recipes you've discovered and how to craft them, so you
don't need to google for the shape and ingredients.
*I say vanilla survival because this is customizable. For example,
a custom map could require you to only craft things they've given you,
and nothing else. In vanilla survival this is purely a tool to help
remember recipes you don't use much, or teach you about new ones that
you may not have known about.
that means a beginner won't just open the recipe book and know all. just what they've discovered.
and again, if you don't like it just don't use it. I use recipe book not for seeing recipes, but for a faster crafting, like PE's MATTIS.
It does not tell you what it does. That is up to you to discover, so the "magic" is still there.
I found it incredibly annoying to have the wiki open all the time just to get the recipe for an item. Now I can get the recipe in-game.
If you want someone to tell you what the item does, you can use the wiki. But I found it dumb that you needed a third-party website to figure out the most basic part of the game, which is crafting the actual items.
Who is going to magically guess how to make a cake? Or a dispenser? Or TNT (who will guess sand?)
And if you don't like it, just don't click the book icon. Do you see people who don't use command blocks petitioning for them to be removed?
Notch was obviously created the crafting system to have no guide. Sure, it may have been pretty annoying, but there's probably a good reason why. Notch is the creator of this amazing game and adding the crafting guide destroys notch's legacy.
Chest loot puts the recipe's accessibility at RNG's mercy, and "sane intuition" wouldn't indicate a recipe at all.
What kind of badly-designed game makes the Player have to progress without knowing how to play before telling them how to play anyways?
Minecraft is not difficult to play. I don't think the Guide should include every recipe anyways, at maximum the ones past furnace and iron pickaxe.
The recipe for the guide could be crafted using a book and a compass. It's not really appealing to common sense, but you get why I chose the combination.
You should never remove a feature from something unless it needs a server you can't support. And the crafting guide doesn't fit into that catergory. I'm all for it being toggleable, though.
Terrible analogy. The in-game crafting guide is a solid reference without having to leave the game and watch videos or read about how to do the same thing.. The Elytra is a reward for reaching an Endership and flying is a creative mode function. Plus, Elytra isn’t flying, it’s gliding.

So wait a second... You're assuming that because Notch made an amazing game, your assuming that fixing a flaw in the gameplay that we are ruining the game, and not improving it?
Notch isn't some supernatural perfect being. His game has had many, many bugs and issues and we aren't ruining his legacy by trying to fix those issues, in a way we're trying to clean up his legacy so that people will look on it with even more respect.
The crafting system itself is silly and pointless except for the fact that it's much more immersive than most crafting systems today, which are more like tool part bartering shops. The crafting guide is there so that new players don't have to memorize recipes or figure them out by trial-and-error, neither of which are fun gameplay mechanics.

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.
I never use the crafting book, even when o forget a recipe I use the wiki out of habit. That being said, some people do use the recipe book and removing that would be unfair. It os a good reasource for many, I'd go as far as suggest more recipe books for smelting and brewing.
The only part I dislike is how ugly the icon looks... maybe instead it can be opened with a key. Imo, inventory is too crowded.
Instead of removing the recipe book, placing an option to disable it would be cool. I do not like using this book, but there are people who find it very useful.
Stop being selfish!

5% support, but not quite none.

Dinnerbone said it's optional.

The only thing the crafting guide tells you is:
1) How to craft it
2) What its name is
It does not tell you what it does. That is up to you to discover, so the "magic" is still there.

and it will be customizable soon. useful for mapmakers, and perhaps you could remove it.

In 4 points:
1. It's the same as just finding the recipes online, but much faster.
2. If you don't like it just don't click the book icon
3. It is very helpful for new or inexperienced players to Minecraft
4. Console editions have it, why not for PC?

The crafting guide should be craftable.
The recipe should be accessible through sane intuition or chest loots, but there shouldn't be a guide before you entered the stone age.

If you remove the crafting guide, may as well remove the wiki and everyone’s tutorials on YouTube, too. I say ADD a crafting guide for potions!!

That is like saying "If we remove elytra, we should remove all mods featuring flight"
