Many games like Minecraft are pretty basic, but, allot have seasons, but why not Minecraft? It would be really cool if it could snow in a Spruce Forest, or new "Autumn" Textures were added. Any opinions?
We have biomes, so it doesn't have to snow in the forest when you could just go to an ice plains to get snow. If you want autumn textures, resource packs are available for that.
Also there are no "years" just days so how would that work?
I certainly wouldn't object if there was a season system but it would have to be something tangential to the actual world. For example, the weather might change so that it rains for longer and/or more frequently with more thunderstorms in the spring, it might snow in the winter, and maybe it hardly rains at all or it only rains for a short time in the summer. Another example might be that the season system changes spawn rates--maybe in the spring there are lots more babies spawning versus adults or maybe even just a lot more spawns in general and maybe in the winter the cold-biome spawning increases to the normal levels that occur in warmer biomes.
It would certainly be nice if we could have changing leaf colors, avalanches, floods, and other block-based seasonal updates, but because of how a Minecraft world is put together these sorts of things would just be far too laggy to be possible.

The same way as any other time a new feature is added or an existing feature is changed--"just because", "because I said so", "I want it", or "it's magic". Minecraft has no lore, which means by extension there are no actual physics describing how a Minecraft world works. This means there's no logical connection necessary to add the next feature, and therefore guns/planes/computers are just as valid as knives/tents/etc. The only limitation, basically, is how much backlash the community or the developer team generates in response to the idea (Mojang isn't going to add what they don't want to add, but sometimes they might not add what they want to if it drives too many players away).

All the different giomes have all the weather you could want. I can't imagine what summer in an "Ice Spikes" would be like ... would the spikes have to melt and then regrow the next winter?
Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.
Seasons would add a lot of cool mechanics, such as raining a lot in spring, dry in summer, and snowy in winter. It could influence crop growth and such. Lakes will freeze over. And like you said, leaves changing colors. I do like the idea of dynamic environments. But honestly, like some of the posters here said: the possible lag induced by this feature might be too big of negative factor here. Not all of us have a beefy computer to handle it. I doubt Mojang is going to spend time on a feature that only a few of us can use. Maybe in a Minecraft 2 if that ever happens.

but really, minecraft could utilize the color mapping for biomes to adjust to and incorporate seasons- rain and snow particles, 'leaf' particles in autumn, snow in certain biomes. An additional biome map like the color map could be a reference to show or tell the game what biomes do what in what season. Instead of the 'snow layer' block being placed(and causing lag) a texture of snowy dust would render and could reduce lag big-time.
Color mapping? we are merely gamers we don't create the game, please /weather is enough for me.
Lol, A suggestion is better received if you can encompass as many functions and features necessary and applicable to the suggestion. This way the suggestion isn't easily disregarded and attracts many different opinions and demographics.
Personally I wouldn't like to have seasons.. I've tried some Mods that give such things & cause no end of lag on my PC.
While it would be nice I think I'd would prefer some type of mechanic that affected your health/Stamina depending on biome/weather
e.g. If you're in a cold biome & not wearing any armor your health decreases slightly faster than normal than if you were wearing Armour...
but if you happen to get undercover & have a heat source - you can recover some health
In a Hot Biome perhaps while running - Your health could drop slightly faster as well & if wearing heavy armor - drops even faster, but walking in such biome causes health to drop 'normally'. Go under cover (eg a mesa overhang) & drinking water bottles help regain some health
Color mapping? we are merely gamers we don't create the game, please /weather is enough for me.
But, RAGNAROK_RINOA, try doing "/weather rain" in a ice spikes. And also, Mojang has made mods into Minecraft "Reality", for example, pistons!
Also, summer would melt ice, then winter would rebuild. So really, if a program that would read how many ticks passed like day and night, then it could change color maapping, to! My dad would know for about this he is a graphics engineer.

I wouldn't mind the cosmetic changes, but stuff that actually impacts the game (such as avalanches, floods, or crop growth) would probably be more irritating than enjoyable. Anything unpredictably destructive is just trolling, and food can already be scarce enough if you begin the game without edible mobs nearby and have to wait for wheat to grow normally (never mind at half rate, or whatever it would be in a poor season!)

massive, game breaking lag spikes every time chunks get loaded when it's a different season seems like a pretty good reason not to add seasons.
Not to mention that there's no real benefit to adding them, as most seasonal features can already be found in different biomes in some way or another
I second this. FWIW, seasons would probably end up being an option available when creating a new world, but turned off by default as most users would find it annoying. Especially when they can go to other biomes to emulate different seasons.
There was a Seasons mod that did this, so it's better to leave it to mods until Mojang has the framework to make it do what it's supposed to w/o the game-breaking lag spikes.

Care to corroborate how this would actually happen?
It would maybe start snowing/raining in a certain season (which we already know doesn't cause lag spikes), and the same colour mapping as is used to differentiate biomes would also be used, which we also know doesn't cause lag spikes.
So what does cause lag spikes?

Are we still talking about the suggestion here? What if I don't want ice melted? What if I don't winter coming in and freezing stuff?

there are a lot of different variables to think about when considering seasons, and a few examples that come to mind straight away for me are, for instance: Will the Jungle experience snow during Winter? Because that wouldn't seem right.
I also don't want to see Ice Spikes melt in summer - I mean, I've been known to build my home in ice spikes, and many of my builds consist of snow blocks as well, so will all that work be washed away in the coming summer? And what about my snow farm, built in a cooler climate so my snow Golems survive... does that mean when a warmer season comes my snowmen will melt and my farm will be in ruins? I certainly don't want to start splashing Henry (my snow Golem) with fire resistant potions when the summer comes around.
Please tell me if these types of concerns are unwarranted.....
I can think of a few good reasons why the mechanics of Minecraft work better with biomes rather than seasons, but honestly I can't think of any good or necessary reasons why seasons would be better. Survival and crafting would become a whole new game.

Rain or snow, /weather what seasons?
