This is something that I think would add a whole new layer to Minecraft. It has always bothered me that the only way to defeat a enemy in Minecraft is to kill it, not only does this not bode well with many parents, but it can get a little tiring. I think Minecraft could be much more fun, cool, and complex if a player (or entities) could be knocked out, captured or put to sleep. How?
Well my idea is that when a player reaches 1 heart of health he/she is "knocked out" and is basically put to sleep on the floor. The player can then be killed or will come to within 40 seconds or so. When they wake up the player is up to half health. While the player is "down" their inventories can be looted, except for the item currently in their hand (or hands) if they do take away one of those items the player "wakes up". This way the players captor can build a prison around them while they are out and take away most of their items. This allows for fun prison escape concepts and also allows the captured player to have a trick (their remaining item) up their sleeve.
This then ties into sleep. A possibility is the ability to have potions and arrows that have a sleep/knockout effect, which puts the player "down" for a certain amount of time. This could also extend the amount of time the captor has of setting up a prison around their prisoner and open up the possibility of trapping someone without having to battle.
One final idea, and i know it would mean a lot of work, is to have naturally generating prisons/lairs with mobs "Bandits, guards, robbers, or something else" attack you or put you to sleep, and then "build" (generate) a small prison or lair around you. They also steal all but two of your items, which you can get back from them by killing them.
Im not sure if mobs should be able to be knocked out, maybe only certain mobs like villagers or illagers. Maybe a sleep arrow or potion would just make them immobile for a certain amount of time.
Finally there is the question of what one does while you sleep. The affected player could maybe be put into spectator mode, or be sent to a dream world (basically a new creative world) while they sleep. The second option could allow creative/ prototyping while sleeping and playing in survival Minecraft modes.
Your parents are offended by killing... In Minecraft...?
I'm sorry, but not only would I rather have to just sit there helplessly for almost a whole minute, I don't feel like being encased in obsidian while I lose absolutely everything with all the players mocking me too during that time.
If you truly truly wanted to, you could already avoid killing in Minecraft. The strongest items are easily obtainable in Minecraft. Just play peaceful, trap mobs with whatever we have now, or I don't know, just not kill them?
This is forcing a player to wait for a set time while they are helpless, bad idea in general. If this were a mod or a map designed around this gameplay concept using command blocks that would be one thing, each player involved would voluntarily be choosing this gameplay. But as an addition to vanilla Minecraft?
No support.
The dreamworld concept and the ability to put mobs to sleep (assumedly for easier transport/capture) seem fine, but anything that takes the player out of relevant gameplay, hinders their ability to return, and leaves them vulnerable to enemies for the duration, is not really a good idea for vanilla Minecraft.
I really don't think this is for real. So you're giving us passing out and bandits and then covering that up with "this will add a whole new layer to the game". Yeah, it will add a layer of anger.

No. Just... No. Making players helpless would be horrible. And mobs that can loot your inventory would be horrible.

Dream World: 90% Support, should also be in beds while not everyone is asleep, or in singleplayer until you click a "wake up" button or 1 min. passes
Sleep Potions: 80% Support (should last a while, self-induced dreams?)
Looting: 70% Support if each item increases the chances of waking up (20%?), as well as 100% for both hands.
Sleep Arrows: 50% Support (should last shorter than potion, should have only % chance of working)
